Human resilience and hope,
By A Customer
This review is from: Love to Water My Soul (Paperback)
Love to Water My Soul has become one of my all time favorite books. I recommend it to anyone who asks for a good book idea. Jane Kirkpatrick's writing shows the resilience of a child and as she grows, an adult. It brought me to tears of sadness, but then of joy. There are so many beautifully written scenes in this book, I had to copy them down in my journal to reread...my one surprise is that Hollywood hasn't turned it in to a movie yet!

A journey toward wholeness,
By A Customer
This review is from: Love to Water My Soul (Paperback)
Something in this writing of Jane's resonated deeply in me, the lone small child in many foreign worlds, learning enough trust to love, surviving being different. All of these things are still with us today, but set in the historical time of Oregon's clash of cultures they bear wider lessons. For me, Jane draws her characters as if they were part of an autobiography. I can easily imagine myself a child alongside Asiam. For those interested in good history as well as a spell-binding tale, I recommend this book.

One of my all time favorite books but her others were not.,
By Fairylander (AR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love to Water My Soul (Paperback)
I loved this book and it gave me the paradigm to see my everyday world differently. I even went through my journals and saw what seemed so bad at the time, that it was for the best in the long run. I just loved her book and became totally absorbed by it. Her female character was strong and brave. After reading it, I couldn't wait to devour all of her other novels in print in 1999. They did not meet the extrodinary writing of Love to Water my Soul.

I had never read Jane before and have since read all her books.I have met her,she care deeply for the native Americans, Oregon, and God. Her books bring the time period to life and make you ponder to many of life's truths. I gave this book to a teacher friend who is making it required reading in her highschool English class, (here in Ore)! I'm so glad I've discovered Jane and look foward to her series on pioneer women.

Nice story, but a little slow in the beginning,

This review is from: Love to Water My Soul (Paperback)
This book tells a very nice story (summarized in other reviews). However, I had some trouble getting started with the book as I found it a little slow in the beginning. I found the writing to be a little bit "flowery" and sometimes wished the author was a little more direct. But overall a good book.

Remarkably forgettable.,

The book reminded me a lot of "Memoirs of a Geisha" because of the detailed descriptions of Native American life and the intricacies of the culture. However, I didn't find myself that concerned with the main character. I was more saddened by what happened to the dog than to her husband. There was something about the author's style of writing and the main character's emotional reserve that left my heart feeling more dry than watered.

One of the best I've ever read.,

Jane Kirkpatrick has a gift for melding together historical facts with spiritual truths. This story, of a girl lost and adopted more than once, is a historical novel, a love story, and a spiritual inspiration. I learned a great deal about the Indian tribes of SE Oregon, and was also moved to look into my soul and examine my own issues of belonging

Fascinating weaving of historical info into a good story,
By A Customer
This review is from: Love to Water My Soul (Paperback)
This novel incorporates detailed research about NW native American history into an involving story about a white child adopted into a Modoc tribe, then sold to another tribe. The cruel treatment the child received, and the later nuturing by a new family make the story credible, but I enjoyed most the description of the daily life and activities of the tribe and gaining an understanding of how the culture really worked. The plot twists add vitality to the story and complexity to the history being described. I've recommended this book to four friends, all have read and enjoyed it
