Review

With cozy pastel scenes and gentle verse, Wells makes tangible the powerful emotional connection between parent and child, reminding children that longing and, more importantly, love are both two-way streets.

More About the Author

Born in New York City, Rosemary Wells grew up in a house "filled with books, dogs, and nineteenth-century music." Her childhood years were spent between her parents' home near Red Bank, New Jersey, and her grandmother's rambling stucco house on the Jersey Shore. Most of her sentimental memories, both good and bad, stem from that place and time. Her mother was a dancer in the Russian Ballet, and her father a playwright and actor. Mrs. Wells says, "Both my parents flooded me with books and stories. My grandmother took me on special trips to the theater and museums in New York. "Rosemary Wells's career as an author and illustrator spans more than 30 years and 60 books. She has won numerous awards, and has given readers such unforgettable characters as Max and Ruby, Noisy Nora, and Yoko. She has also given Mother Goose new life in two enormous, definitive editions, published by Candlewick. Wells wrote and illustrated Unfortunately Harriet, her first book with Dial, in 1972. One year later she wrote the popular Noisy Nora. "The children and our home life have inspired, in part, many of my books. Our West Highland white terrier, Angus, had the shape and expressions to become Benjamin and Tulip, Timothy, and all the other animals I have made up for my stories." Her daughters Victoria and Beezoo were constant inspirations, especially for the now famous "Max" board book series. "Simple incidents from childhood are universal," Wells says. "The dynamics between older and younger siblings are common to all families."But not all of Wells' ideas come from within the family circle. Many times when speaking, Mrs. Wells is asked where her ideas come from. She usually answers, "It's a writer's job to have ideas." Sometimes an idea comes from something she reads or hears about, as in the case of her recent book, Mary on Horseback, a story based on the life of Mary Breckenridge, who founded the Frontier Nursing Service. Timothy Goes to School was based on an incident in which her daughter was teased for wearing the wrong clothes to a Christmas concert. Her dogs, west highland terriers, Lucy and Snowy, work their way into her drawings in expression and body position. She admits, "I put into my books all of the things I remember. I am an accomplished eavesdropper in restaurants, trains, and gatherings of any kind. These remembrances are jumbled up and changed because fiction is always more palatable than truth. Memories become more true as they are honed and whittled into characters and stories."

I borrowed this book from the library without reading it first. I will say that I teared up while reading it to my son. Being a full-time working mom, I was very touched by the first lines: "Mommy goes to work. Be brave." My son also teared up a little, which shows it's at a level that a two year old can appreciate. I would have rated this book five stars, except for the overtly sexist gender roles with which the author casts the parents. Mommy is a waitress in a cafe while daddy works in a high-rise downtown. I took offense to this, being a highly educated professional, and I hate giving my son such poor examples of women in work/family settings. Overall, I loved the message of the book, but was disappointed by the blatant sexist stereotypes.

It's hard when Mom and Dad go off to work. Children miss their parents during the long time they are separated. Did you know that parents send love waves to their children? The love waves can go "around the world, around the sun" and "they can fly a thousand miles or one."

Beautiful sparkling love waves zip across the page from parents to children, to remind children that their parents love them and are thinking of them.

"Out of my office window, can you hear me sing,
over the noise of the city, the song of the Pirate King?
I send love waves speeding,
flying as fast as birds, catching rides in taxis...
silvery ribbons of words:
`Daddy is coming. He's on his way.'"

This is a delightful book. My 3-year-old granddaughter is adopted from China, and she has serious abandonment issues. She finds this story very comforting and wants it read over and over.

If you are a parent who works outside of the home and you have young children, you will relate to the content of the latest book by popular author Rosemary Wells. The parents in this book, leave their child to go to work, but think about the child all day long and sending "love waves" as their day progresses without their child.
It is a story about how a family can cope with the responsibilities of family life, child care, and jobs outside of the home. It clearly show show a child can feel secure, safe and loved even when a parent is absent due to work. It is through the loving thoughts or "love waves" they send to their child.

In accordance to the Amazon Policy, I am letting you know that I received a copy of this book free from the publisher, but this did not alter my thoughts on the book that I have shared above.

I read this to my small daughter, not thinking one of her books could choke me up. It's a wonderful book for those of us who have to work to support our families, the central idea being, no matter what, when we have to be apart, it's hard on both of us, but we can send loves waves to each other til we come back home, and we're never apart. As she gets older, I intend to read this to her over and over, because it's such a sweet, thoughtful message for small children, AND parents.

The book contains gentle, loving rhymes about both Mommy and Daddy going to work, and the "love waves" travelling over the miles to the little bunny until they return. A final section talks about "love waves" through the house when the child is in bed at night. Very sweet and soothing way to talk about separation issues. My daughter asks to hear about the love waves every night as I leave her bedroom!

Best book I ever bought as a bedtime store. Very sweet. Really helped out when my little boy went to kindergarten and we missed each other so much. We still talk about love waves and he is now 7 years old! A classic story.
