Editorial Reviews

The title of Jason Gray's newest Centricity Music release, LOVE WILL HAVE THE FINAL WORD, speaks of decisiveness and closure. It's a statement of confidence and determination. And it's true: we live in the assurance that through all of our ups and downs, the ultimate victory has been won for us, and Love has spoken.

It's those ups and downs, though, that are the tricky part, and this this soul-stirring collection of music speaks directly and powerfully to our present reality. This is an album that bravely avoids trite and simple platitudes thrown at our very real and complex circumstances. It's an album that recognizes our loneliest of lows and our most hopeful highs. It's an album that knows when to show empathy, when to give advice, and when to just come alongside and grieve.

Jason Gray has emerged as a songwriter of extraordinary depth, with a noteworthy ability to convey deep theological truths in engaging three-and-a-half minute songs. The Minnesota native is steadily drawing legions of fans who recognize his ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level, offering not escape or distraction, but healing and hope. His 2012 release, A WAY TO SEE IN THE DARK, was named Album of the Year by critics and garnered three top-five radio singles, including 'Nothing is Wasted', which hit #1 for nine weeks.

Ever since I first heard "Blessed Be" by Jason Gray from his album All the Lovely Losers I was hooked by the emotional and biblical messages of his songs. Jason is an anointed songwriter and he has a profound way of affecting me deeply with his poignant words, tender singing, and inspirational truths.

For Jason's newer listeners, this album is loaded with the type of musical hooks that have made him a radio fixture from his string of hit songs, "More like Falling in Love," "I Am New," "Remind Me Who I Am," "Good to Be Alive" and "Nothing is Wasted." For his longtime fans of his entire body of singer-songwriter work, you'll be thrilled to add this album to your collection, his best overall album in my opinion.

This album opens with the radio-friendly and fun song "Laugh out Loud." which showcases Jason's gifts as a songwriter. The song features an upbeat musical bed and opens with the lyrical word pictures, "I shake my head at my good fortune, As I shake the dust off my boots, Yesterday I was an orphan, somehow today I belong to You, Don't it make you want to laugh out loud and shout Hallelujah!" The album is loaded with that type of worshipful truth as Jason praises God for His goodness in every song.

Jason is a gifted storyteller, and like in his previous offerings, the highlights are found in his vulnerable prayer-songs, including lead single, "With Every Act of Love." It is commanded by Jesus in Matthew 5:16 to "let your light shine" so that others may praise God based on seeing the power of His life in us. We need to celebrate that freedom with our hands reaching out to others in Christ and show His light in us and let Him shine in us. That's what this song is about.

In the CCM 35th Anniversary Issue, TobyMac, formerly of dcTalk, said, “One of the things we lose perspective of is how needy we are.” One reason why I like Love Will Have the Final Word and each of Jason Gray’s releases is that he continually reminds me of my need for grace.

One obvious example is “Don’t Know How,” where someone could mistakenly interpret the opening lines as a before Christ experience. Rather, when Gray sings, “I want to believe but I don’t know how/Trust what I can’t see but I don’t know how,” he is recognizing his utter dependence on God, particularly when “baptized in the burning flame/when the troubles come my way.”

The distorted background, sounding like tranquilized grunge, complements the desperation in the lyrics and vocal delivery: “I have no choice but to cry out for you/Please help ’cause I’m helpless now.” I relate to this brokenness and the longing for wholeness, more than unattainable perfection.

If we read to know that we are not alone, the same can apply to listening. On the title track, when Gray sings, “When the voice of fear rages in my head/Reading down a long list of my regret/When the ruins are all I see/Remind me that it only means love isn’t finished speaking yet.” It helps me to know that I am not the only one to see the ruins. I need the reminder that “As long as God is on His throne/I am carried by the hope that love will have the final word.” Haunting, echoing guitar lines add an ethereal quality.

One could easily conclude that this life is characterized by sorrow, but joy will not be absent on the morning when we wake from the slumber of the world’s long night. In the eternal scheme, joy is deeper than sorrow.

Jason Gray is my favorite artist, mostly because of his honest and thoughtful lyrics that resonate so deeply with me and pour Life and Truth into my heart. After "A Way to See in the Dark" with courageous choices to trust God's promises in hard places, this album is full of the hope and peace that results in walking forward in faith. Great work!

I saw Jason in concert with SCC last year and was very impressed by him. I rarely buy music as I prefer silence when I can get it but I decided to get this CD and I'm so glad I did. I've listened to it over and over and over. The lyrics are profound and his voice is beautiful. So happy I bought it and I'm now on the hunt for more of his CDs.

I have seen Jason Gray in concert several times. And purchased all his cd's since he's had a label. This is his best yet. He writes and sings from his heart thru God's heart to your heart. He makes it very clear that you don't have to be all cleaned up to be desired by the Creator of the Universe. I marvel at Jason's songs that convey so much love for us.when we believe we are not at all lovable. Jason Gray, thank you for creating such beauty, heart, joy, and truth through your music.
