Review

'Bell fights every impulse in our culture to domesticate Jesus [and] challenges the reader to be open to surprise, mystery and all of the unanswerables... Bell has given theologically suspicious Christians new courage to bet their life on Jesus Christ.' (Christian Century) 'Claiming that some versions of Jesus should be rejected, particularly those used to intimidate and inspire fear or hatred, Bell persuasively interprets the Bible as a message of love and redemption... His style is characteristically concise and oral, his tone passionate and unabashedly positive.' (Publishers Weekly) 'One of the nation's rock-star-popular young pastors, Rob Bell, has stuck a pitchfork in how Christians talk about damnation.' (USA Today) 'It isn't easy to develop a biblical imagination that takes in the comprehensive and eternal work of Christ... Rob Bell goes a long way in helping us acquire just such an imagination without a trace of soft sentimentality and without compromising an inch of evangelical conviction.' (Eugene H. Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, and author of The Message and The Pastor) 'A bold, prophetic and poetic masterpiece. I don't know any writer who expresses the inexpressible love of God as powerfully and as beautifully as Rob Bell! No one who seriously engages this book will put it down unchanged. A 'must read' book!' (Greg Boyd, senior pastor at Woodland Hills Church and author of The Myth of a Christian Nation) 'In Love Wins, Rob Bell tackles the old heaven-and-hell question and offers a courageous alternative answer. Thousands of readers will find freedom and hope and a new way of understanding the biblical story - from beginning to end.' (Brian D. McLaren, author of A New Kind of Christianity and Naked Spirituality)

I like Rob Bell's style, it draws you in and engages you, unlike so many dry theological books.

I like the fact that he asks questions, and sometimes leaves you to answer them. From my own point of view, I found what he said resonated with many of the deep concerns I have with modern preaching, particularly that encountered in fundamentalist churches.

For me the ultimate question that Bell poses is "How can a loving, all-powerful creator allow beings to come into existence only to then punish them with eternal torment if they don't live up to his extremely high expectations?" It is a nonsense, and Bell exposes this using scripture with its original translations e.g. the word Hell in the Bible actually refers to a rubbish dump on the outskirts of Jerusalem and the way we use the word eternal is quite different from the way it was meant when said by people of Jesus' time.

That said, I don't think he gives enough time to the fact that Jesus does talk on many occasions of the consequences of rejecting the "real" Jesus or God, or of "sinning" and that his inference that everyone gets to heaven in the end is a long way from what Jesus actually said, and doesn't seem fair or just.

I would have given Bell five stars if he had spent more time focused on the alternative outcome to heaven or hell...spiritual death. Wouldn't a just God give everyone the best possible chance of getting it right, but if after all that they screw up...then wouldn't it be best to allow them to cease to exist? This would be both just and merciful, and would also tie in with the scripture "The wages of sin are death".

This book changed my life. After 30 years of attending evangelical churches and bible studies where turn or burn and penal substitution is some how conveyed as compatible with a loving father, Rob Bell gives a researched and thoughtful alternative to this harsh and illogical outlook in this easy to read and inspirational book. Thanks Rob you have given me back my faith.

Rob Bell should receive a bravery award, for daring to articulate questions that need to be asked and indeed must be asked. As a considered Arminian evangelical believer I too have wrestled with the issues Bell raises, and although I cannot agree with the rather vague direction he appears to be heading, I take his point that our faith positions are not as fixed as the "double predestination" crew who are understandably affronted by his daring and popularity. Thankfully in the end God wins, and the cross confirms that he (God) is other centred which also means love wins. Selah.

Brilliant brilliant! The damage "hell" has done to the human psyche goes much deeper than most people will acknowledge, in fear of the "god" who backs it.... Finally voices are crying out like John - "No one has seen the Father - except Him who is from the bosom of the Father... He has come to declare Him"! Love is not complicated... a child understands it... But who can love a "god" who punishes their own offspring for eternity in eternal fire?
