This is as well a written book as any I have read. As the character developed, we watch him grow from a young man full of dreams to a jaded, emotionally starved soldier as he faces war in all its ugliness. After the war, as Robert returns home scared, maimed physically as well as emotionally , the ideal life he thought he was returning to is now gone. How he deals with this, and is finally able to move on from the terrible memories that plague him is very moving. I recommend this book to anyone who has truly lived life, felt its pain and lived its joy.

*warning- the language in this book is rough but the story is worth it.

I started reading "Love is a Wounded Soldier" one evening, intending to read just the first chapter. I couldn't put it down! By the next night, I had read the whole book. This book fulfilled the requirements for me to consistently want to read...just one more chapter.

What I liked most about Blaine's book was the detail in his descriptions of people, places, and situations. He definitely has a gift with words. The descriptions really put me in the place of the characters, without being too wordy. I could completely envision the mood and setting throughout the book.

I also appreciated that the plot in "Love is a Wounded Soldier" was real. What I mean by "real", is that it touched the heart of so many human emotions. Emotions that most adults have felt in some way, at some level in our lives; love, betrayal, anger, forgiveness. I spent a good portion of the last half of the book with tears streaming down my face.

The last portion of the book was very emotional for me. The lesson can be summed up in a phrase I want to remember from the book:

"Forgiveness is a choice you make. And it's a choice you can decide to make the moment you've been wronged, or it's a choice you can decide your never gonna make."

This is definitely an "adult" fiction book. It does contain course language that may be offensive to some readers. I could have done without it, but I understand that it makes the story more true to the context it is written in. There is also some descriptions of "marital relations" (not in a crude way at all), and violence (describing the war of course).

There is also prominent spiritual content woven throughout this book. Robby's mother is a Christian, and the community "hub" is the local Baptist church. There is an underlying moral messages in the book that speaks of moral purity in a number of ways. Alcohol is portrayed as a substance that destroys lives. Love, forgiveness, and listening to truth are attributed to choosing Jesus or the Christian life. While it's not a classic inspirational fiction novel, it does reference scriptural principles and consequences of negative life choices throughout. I liked that.

I would be interested in reading more books that Blaine may publish in the future.

Robert's life has never been easy and at sixteen it just got a little harder. His father an abusive drunk is never around when he's needed. Robert finds his mother dead and must take charge of burying her. It's more than a sixteen year old boy should have to deal with. Then his life get better. He meets Ellen and falls in love. They are happy together and enjoying their new life when in 1940 he's drafted. World War II begins and he's right in the thick of it. Robert knows his life will be different but just how different he could never have guessed. Witnessing things only a soldier can know about for years. Doing the impossible. His goal is to get back home to Ellen and begin their life together. Sometimes the best laid plans fail.

A stirring account of a soldier's life before, during and after World War II, this book keeps it very real. The story pulls at the heart strings and guides you along side of Robert as he deals with everyday issues and some rather extraordinary ones too. I love that the beginning of the book is an apology of sorts to his grandson for not always answering his questions as he was growing up. Robert's hardship and determination makes him a very likable character. This is one book for the ages. I'm sure it will become a favorite in most households.

I didn't find any issues.

I gave this one 5 out of 5 books because of the awesome detailing and intricate love story.

I enjoy creating anything that's beautiful, humorous, clever or profound. If you write something that doesn't trigger emotion, all you've done is string together words.
I have a short attention span. I will probably never write a similar novel to Love is a Wounded Soldier. I may never write another novel at all. I may write music, poetry, a TV sitcom, satire, or standup comedy. It's anyone's guess. Or maybe I won't write anything. It's anyone's guess. I'm pretty sure I'll always like the smell of gasoline, though.
