Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 - The infectious song from Guys and Dolls is delightfully celebrated in this illustrated version. Two endearing ducklings, one wearing overalls and the other in a pink skirt and headband, court one another while going through a busy day on the farm. The vibrantly colored single- and double-page paintings are packed with humorous details. For example, one scene shows the male duck driving a pickup truck while the female rides in the back with a load of pumpkins. One bump later, she and the pumpkins are lifted into the air. Next, she drives the truck while he rides in the back. For the lyrics "Barrel and a heap/and I'm talkin' in my sleep/about you./About you?/About you!/My heart is leapin'!/I'm having trouble sleepin'!" the illustrations show the duck lying wide awake in his bed, and then finally phoning his sleepy sweetheart on the next page. In the end, the couple drives off in a wind-up toy red convertible. Delicious endpapers show bushels and pecks of freshly harvested produce against a deep blue background. The words and music are appended. This merry romp is perfect for little "guys and dolls." - Bina Williams, Bridgeport Public Library, CT

From Booklist

PreS. In an exuberant read-aloud for the lap-sit crowd, Wells illustrates Loesser's famous song from Guys and Dolls with bright farmyard scenes of two ducklings that flirt and play. The ducks embody the best of Wells' popular animal cast, both sweet and tough, and toddlers will be smitten by the blend in words and pictures of soppy love, mischief, and mayhem ("The cows and chickens / are going to the dickens"). He is in overalls; she is in a purple skirt. They jump rope, and he dances on the apple barrel; plays accordion, banjo, trumpet, and violin ("doodle oodle oodle") for her; and shouts "I love you" from a propeller plane flying above the fields. Loesser's words and music are at the back, and the sweet nonsense is sure to have both readers and listeners joining in with the ducks to act out the hugs and pecks. Hazel Rochman

I came across this book while searching for the lyrics to the 'Bushel & A Peck' song from the 'Guys and Dolls' soundtrack. My grandmother used to sing the song to my mother and my mother used to sing the song to my sister and I. In keeping tradition, we both now sing the song to our children and I was so excited when I found this book! The kids love the little duck characters as they sing the song through the vibrantly colored pages. We all 'doodle oodle oodle' through the end!! If you like the song - - you will absolutely love the book!!

My 2 1/2 year old twins love it when I sing this song to them, so I was thrilled to find a book that illustrated it. The pictures are bright and fun, and it's always nice when the publisher includes the lyrics/music, as it does in this one.

My mother taught this song to me when I was little & now I can share it with my children too. The pictures are bright & engaging. My three year old & 16 month old both like to "read" the book & we sing the song together when we are finished.

My mother has always sung this song to our son, who is now 29 and about to become a father for the first time. What better way to keep the tradition going than to have a book to read to a great-grandchild that says the same thing? The book is large enough to hold with a child, with large print and brightly-colored pictures that are fun to look at. It's short enough to read without a little one losing interest -- and to be able to sing while you read -- what fun! Share it with someone you love "a bushel and a peck!"

A children's book based on a musical number from "Guys and Dolls"? A number that was part of a nightclub act no less? Plus it was left out of the movie version!?! As it turns out, this catchy ditty originally performed by Miss Adelaide and her Chicadees is a great song for little kids. My mother, who is "Grandma" to my 4-year-old nephew, and a long-time music teacher and Broadway fan, had already taught him the song. He loves going "Doodle-oodle-ooh-doo-doo" in a high voice at the end of each verse, and that in verse 3, the chickens are going to the dickens! So when I found out about this book, I had to get it for him. It arrived while Grandma was visiting so they read and sung it together. Grandma has since gone home, but Mommy and Daddy can sing and read it to him too. If you're looking for a cute book that you can sing with your kids, a song that was originally written for adults in a 50s-era Broadway musical so it won't annoy you like most kids songs, and has a delightful story attached with ducks and other barnyard animals, look no further. If only Loesser was still alive to see his Hollywood-rejected song turned into a fun-filled children's book and cash the royalty checks...

My young daughter loves this book. She knows the tune from one of the Putamayo CD's (Dan Zanes sings this song.) Too sweet.

I was so tickled to find this book in the bookstore today, because I always sang the first verse of this song to my daughter when she was little. But I always forget the words beyond the first verse!

The illustrations by Rosemary Wells are almost incidental, the song is so cute on its own, but they are certainly cute. They are little chicks "courting" in very sweet, old fashioned ways -- drinking lemonade, jumping rope, etc. They are bright and colorful. Other farm animals get in the mix too.

My favorite part of the book is the super cute "doodle oodle oodle, doodle oodle oodle, doodle oodle oodle ooh!" I had forgotten about that part, and my daughter already loves singing it along.

The music and lyrics are in the back too in case you're not sure how a part of it goes...

So excited to have found this!
