I find it strange to be writing this review as my wife turned me on to Candy Dulfer. Usually I'm not a big fan of my wife's music (she likes Mariah Carey's type of bubblegum pop a bit too much for me) but over time this album and her Greatest Hits really grew on me. It really does jam and has some great bass lines to boot.

2.0 out of 5 stars A weak point in Ms. Dulfer's career
I bought this CD only because I'm a huge fan of Candy Dulfer, and I bought it cheap from an auction site. It's interesting to see her making the transition from her sultry and nuanced "Saxuality" to the straight-up dance jazz of "What Does It Take". This CD lacks the coherence of her earlier and later albums, as if Candy were suffering from...

As for her jazz 'purity' (whatever that is) I don't really know. All I know is it's some good music. A bit funky, a bit fun and she can really wail on the saxophone.

Her Greatest Hits is also good and she pays tribute to Miles Davis and covers Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' to give you a sampling of what she plays. Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good blend of jazz and dance beats, September 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
I can't stop playing this CD in my player. Candy has gone a long way from her days with Prince, and her individuality is all over this CD. What makes it striking is that it blends the elements of hip-hop and street music with sounds of upbeat jazz. "Give Me Some More" and "Gititon" are great examples of this blend, and many of the rest stay more on the jazzy side. Candy's vocals are great surprises to the tracks, and the songs are great to dance to. Sure, it's a record with more of a pop appeal, and it could be better. Nevertheless, it's a good CD for first-time jazz listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely sultry., December 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
Candy Dulfur is a pioneer in the "new" Jazz Revolution. This album, For The Love Of You is the best of the three albums. This LP shows the renewal of her commitedness to the jazz-hiphop musical style. Not only is she beautiful as ever, but her sax style has a finess all its own.

I bought this CD only because I'm a huge fan of Candy Dulfer, and I bought it cheap from an auction site. It's interesting to see her making the transition from her sultry and nuanced "Saxuality" to the straight-up dance jazz of "What Does It Take". This CD lacks the coherence of her earlier and later albums, as if Candy were suffering from artistic growing pains. Happily, all turned out well in the end for her, but this particular album is too unfocused to really make an impression. Furthermore, some of the songs were jarring and gave me headaches.

You won't be sorry buying any of Ms. Dulfer's other work, but I just don't have it in me to recommend this one, even to diehard fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album that is more than what it appears to be ..., April 18, 2003

This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
If one wants a hint about what this album is really about, take a look at the cover photo. You'll notice Ms. Dulfer looking happily in the direction of her right hand ... which has a ring on it. In the back of the included booklet, we discover what type of ring it actually is, who gave it to her & what he looks like. The dedication (in the "Thank You" section) next to it says it all:

"Finally, to Thomas: It's all for the love of you!"

And who is Thomas? Her husband. Essentially, this album is Candy Dulfer's way of saying "I love you" to him. Pretty cool, isn't it? I sense this is why "For The Love Of You" has that extra speical something to it. It does sound fabulous!! An insightful peek into the mind, and heart, of a great saxophonist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Candy's Best Studio CD, December 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
This is probably Candy Dulfer's best studio recordings. My personal favorite is "Gititon", a very funky composition. However, to truly appreciate Candy, you need to see/hear her live. Unfortunately, her best CD, "Live in Amsterdam", is not (yet) available in the U.S. Listening to her playing live shows that she is more than just a (very) pretty face. For instance, the studio recording of "For the Love of You" is good, but the live version featuring Angie Stone is outstanding. So buy this CD and pick up the live CD on your next trip to Europe!

4.0 out of 5 stars The sweet sax sounds of Candy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, August 13, 2001
This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
Candy just keeps getting better with every new release. She deserves more recognition for her funky sax sound. I hope this CD sells a gazillion copies so that more fans know she is out there!

3.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it, but I find it dull., October 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
Candy has a nice tone and a good PR man. My daughter loves this recording because she plays sax and needs role models. Since I'm an old guy, I don't relate to the music. There's not enough jazz in it for me. The dance rhythms are strong, though.

This review is from: For the Love of You (Audio CD)
Almost everybody finds at least 4 (Four) or 6 (Six) cuts on ANY of her albums to groove and/or fingersnap to (I have yet to buy the project where she called herself trying to be a 'Pop' Singer, but it didn't take long for her to go back to her roots)...Be it a party, chillin' out, working out, Etc., Etc. you're gonna find something!!! This project is no exception. Standout Tracks: "For The Love Of You", "Smooth", and "Wish You Were Here".
