Book Description

August 9, 2011
An intimate family memoir written by a mother on the adoption of her youngest child.
Following the invisible thread of connection between people who are seemingly intended to become family, journalist Jennifer Grant shares the deeply personal, often humorous story of adopting a fifteen month-old girl from Guatemala when Grant was already the mother of three young children. She captures her family's journey in stories that will not only encourage adoptive parents, but will engage those who are curious about adoption or whose lives have been indirectly touched by it. Love You More explores universal themes such as parenthood, marriage, miscarriage, infertility, connection, destiny, failure and redemption. Sections include:
  • Starting the Journey
  • Waiting for Mia
  • Learning to Know
In Love You More, Grant describes the way God has brought her family together and completed it with the adoption of her daughter.

From the Author

Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter grew from a series of columns I wrote about adopting my daughter years ago for Sun-Times Media newspapers. The series was called "The Red Thread: On Adoption" and was mainly comprised of personal stories about my experience adopting from Guatemala, but also highlighted topics around foster care in the U.S., theories of attachment, and other issues of interest to families.

Over the few years when I dedicated my column to writing about adoption, I received email from people all over the U.S. Someone would read my column, clip or email it to a friend elsewhere in the country whose life was touched by adoption, and as time went by, I felt enveloped by a wonderful community of adoptive parents. I've learned so much - what it can feel like to adopt a child with special needs such as brain damage or HIV, hard stories of unethical adoption or disrupted adoptions, and much more. All of what I learned informed me as I wrote Love You More.
Although I hoped, in writing this memoir, to encourage, educate, and engage families whose lives have been touched by adoption, that the book is a gift to my daughter was ever on my mind. Writing it felt like a weighty responsibility and an honor.

More About the Author

A writer and mother of four, Grant has particular interests in "good enough" parenting, the whims of popular culture, and exceptional Vietnamese food. She has written a column and many health and parenting feature stories for the Chicago Tribune and is a regular contributor to Fullfill, Sojourners' God's Politics blog, and Christianity Today's her.meneutics blog for women.

Grant is a promiscuous reader who (usually) finishes what she starts, but is just as likely to be found reading Dinosaur Bob as Kate Chopin. She serves as a judge for the Christy awards (2012, 2013). In 2012, she was a presenter (on the "tricky bits" of writing memoir) at Calvin College's Festival of Faith and Writing. Grant contributed to Always There: Reflections on God's Presence for Moms (Revell, 2012) and Everyday Matters Bible for Women (Hendrickson, 2012).

Her work has also been published on britannica.com, adoption.com, momitforward.com, eatdinner.org, and in magazines including Chicago Parent, Christianity Today, Draft, MomSense, and Conscious Choice. For more than a decade, she wrote features, restaurant profiles, and general interest and family life columns for Sun-Times Media newspapers. Grant was a founding member of Redbud Writers Guild and is a member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC).

Grant is currently at work on Disquiet Time (disquiettime.com) with her friend and collaborator Cathleen Falsani. She is also writing 12: A Daybook, to be published by Loyola Press.

Released in May 2012 from Worthy Publishing, her second book, MOMumental: Adventures in the Messy Art of Raising a Family, was featured in Publishers Weekly and The Christian Science Monitor.

Jennifer's memoir, Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter was published in August 2011 by Thomas Nelson publishers.

Jennifer is a graduate of Wheaton College (IL) and received her Masters degree in English literature with concentrations in fiction writing and critical theory (Go Derrida!) from Southern Methodist University. 5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended! July 22, 2011

Adoption has shaped my life in ways both beautiful and heartbreaking.

We were foster parents with Bethany Christian Services for two years. It was a high honor to be a part of the birth of a new family, and witness the courage of birth parents who'd chosen to release their babies into a future with this carefully-chosen family. Beautiful.

The heartbreaking part of adoption in my life comes in two different forms: My mom was adopted under a veil of secrecy by an alcoholic relative and his wife after her birth mom died. And during our own foster parenting years, our attempts to adopt an older child in the state system were unsuccessful.

The heartbreak only serves to underscore the eternal importance of adoption to me. Scripture highlights the stunning bravery of the adopted Esther, and refers to the people chosen to be brought into God's family with language that highlights the intimacy of the relationship. It reflects his heart and changes lives.

And the lives that get changed aren't just those of the adoptees. Author Jennifer Grant has penned a wonderfully honest memoir of her journey into adoption that shows how her life, her marriage, her family and her network of relationships have all been reshaped by the adoption of her fourth child, Mia.

Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter (Thomas Nelson, 2011) documents her journey from busy mother of three children born in the span of 3-1/2 years through the deep sense she and her husband had that their fourth child was waiting "out there" somewhere, through the adoption decathalon and into the always-shifting challenges and blessings of becoming and being a forever family:

I was eager to prove wrong the people who expressed concern about my adopting her - those who told me horror stories about troubled adopted children, who wondered aloud whether she would be close to her siblings, who lamented that she wouldn't compare favorably with my older three. In my heart, I knew these cynics were wrong (and indeed time has shown that they were), but instead of releasing their negative comments, I set out - for a time - to prove them wrong.
Now that my little daughter is a happy, thriving member of the family, I find myself spending much more time just being with her. We look at the autumn leaves. We read books. We laugh together at her silly jokes.
I enjoy her presence, and my own.
And loving her makes me want to be present for others too...Adopting Mia...(has) torn off the veneer and helped me to live a little more honestly - which is to say, of course, that's it's made my life harder.

Grant's insights are rich (the chapters in the section entitled "Waiting For Mia" would be super-helpful reading for anyone pondering what it's like to enter the adoption process), poignant (her story about feasting on blueberries with Mia a couple of days after she brought her home and realizing she had no idea what her little girl liked to eat put a lump in my throat) and honest (meshing lives is a messy process). Her faith shines through, but the book's focus isn't at all "Christian adoption" but "A Christian family who adopted a little girl from Guatemala". In other words, an occasionally heart-rending and wholly beautiful adoption story.

Though the 221-page book will appeal to adoptive families, I believe anyone who appreciates a finely-crafted memoir loaded will find Love You More well worth their time. Highly recommended.

Love You More, The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter
By Jennifer Grant
Published by Thomas Nelson

Jennifer Grant's Love You More, weaves together the intricacies of international adoption with all of the emotions that go along with creating a blended family. Her story of adopting a child from Guatemala not only speaks of the process itself, but of how this divine blessing from God impacts the lives of her husband, her three young children, and herself. This poignant and moving story speaks to the heart of any parent or anyone who plans to have children by either childbirth or adoption. Grant's words paint a true picture of what parenting in any facet is all about.

I found this true story fascinating and well-spoken from cover to cover. In addition to speaking about the adoption process, this book spoke volumes on what it means to be a good parent. Written in easy to understand language, this story touches on the inner working of the heart, obedience to God, and how true reliance on God is necessary to live a happy and fulfilled life. Without sugar-coating, Grant gives an inspirational account of her family's adoption experience that is often interspersed with down to earth humor. Details of her journey are covered from beginning to end without ever becoming boring. Grant also includes numerous resources on adoption at the back of the book.

I would highly recommend this book to those who are considering adoption, any parent, or anyone who simply enjoys reading about real-life families. I absolutely loved reading this book with all of its insights and offerings. I found myself unwilling to put it down, and read it in just a couple of days.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, courtesy of Thomas Nelson and the BookSneeze Blogger Program, for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I have not been compensated in any other manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book November 7, 2011
Format:Paperback
Not all people are called to parenthood, and not all families look the same. Even those called to parenthood do not always get there in the same exact way. Jennifer Grant discusses her transition from young married to mother, and how the blessing of international adoption played a role in her family.

What a fitting book to review during National Adoption Month. And I can honestly say that this book is a blessing to me. Very few books are so honest and loving about the fact that not everyone is called to parenting, not every Christian is called to adopt, and not every adoption is a smooth as you see in the movies. I was moved countless times by Jennifer's courage as she related her doubts, not only as an adoptive mother but as a biological mother. I love that Jennifer is so candid about her fears, her negative opinions on international adoption, and the fact that this is her story, this journey worked for her family, but it may not work for every family.

I know several families who have been blessed by adoption, and I know that each family's situation is different. Each family has different struggles, and I think often adoptive parents feel that they cannot show frustration or anger or weariness with their children. They fought so hard to get these children, they feel they must be happy and grateful all of the time. Jennifer stresses that regardless of how a child comes into your family, as a parent you have a right, if not a duty, to express what is appropriate or acceptable for your child, and what is not. It is perfectly fine for a parent, adoptive or biological, to be angry or hurt because of their child's actions or words. It is perfectly fine to feel frustrated. You have the right to feel what every other mother in the world feels.

I personally thing this book is a wonderful, loving resource for all families considering adoption, in the process of adoption, or who have gone through an adoption already. I love hearing Jennifer's story, and I am sure it will bless many families.
