Book Description

June 1, 1994
Questions of pacifism and just war, which have preoccupied Christian thinkers from time to time over the past 1700 years, are given distinctive treatment in this book as it discusses biblical sources for the questions, builds on historical examples both of just war theory and of pacifism, and shows how Christian pacifism is a live option in many contexts. Lisa Sowle Cahill examines the theological bases of just war theory and pacifism, especially in light of the concept of the kingdom of God, as that motif illuminates Christian discipleship. Differences between the theory and just war and the practice of pacifism are highlighted in the overview of the history of Christian thought on the subject, and the inclusiveness of the ideal of the kingdom for pacifism is emphasized.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study in Christian Peace Thinking, October 18, 2004
By
Craig M. Watts (coral springs, florida USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Your Enemies (Paperback)
Cahill's volume is a well researched and insightful study of Christian views on war and pacifism. She could not possibly offer an exhaustive examination of the subject in a book of such modest size. Nevertheless, what she offers is substancial and balanced in judgement. Her style is engaging and accessible for anyone of moderate intelligence who is interested in this vitally important subject matter. This is a fine work, well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Bainton, March 15, 2010
This review is from: Love Your Enemies (Paperback)
This book by Dr. Cahill will prove to be of immense help for moral theologians and educated laity in discerning the moral implications and solutions to today's vexing international climate. Dr. Cahill's book goes beyond the classic book by Dr. Roland Bainton, "Christian Attitudes Toward War and Peace". This book engages the complex terrain of international relations in an age of terror and preventive war. While some may deem this book to be tedious in some places, I would heartily disagree. The subject discussed is a highly complex one and demands thorough discussion that requires some repetition. Her discussion on discipleship is first rate, recognizing the ideal of Christian discipleship while at the same time recongnizing that issues such as humanitarian intervention are so complex that the ideal may not be always open to us in making a sound moral decision.

I recommend this book for any serious moral thinker and policymaker to aid them in understanding the moral choices before them when it comes to war and peace in 21st century.
