5.0 out of 5 stars Prescription for a Beautiful Marriage April 8, 2010
Format:Paperback
One line from Jennifer's inspiring book on marriage sums up the whole nicely: "If you want to see your husband grow and bloom, then let him feel the warmth of your loving embrace, the water of your supportive, encouraging, respectful words, the sunshine of your admiring smile."

The "warmth of your loving embrace" refers to the first half of the book (Part One: Love Him Physically) which, at 158 pages long, is chock-full of scriptural support, scientific research, and experiential wisdom on the supreme importance of the sexual union in a sweet, mutually-satisfying marriage (not just from the author's 20-plus years of marriage but from a rich collection of marriage "experts" quoted extensively). Readers will be surprised at the unconventional approach to this subject...i.e. an active sex life provides many health benefits, is an antidote to stress and depression, turns back the hands of time, is a path to oneness and fun-ness (if I can use such a word!), has a profound impact upon a couple's children, and cultivates a deep, impenetrable bond. (My favorite "nugget" is Jennifer's advice to PRAY TOGETHER before that most intimate of activities! Read to find out why...)

The "water" and "sunshine" of Jennifer's gardening analogy refer to the second half of the book (Part Two: Love Him Unconditionally) which is also a treasure trove of wisdom, encouragement, and exhortation. With further insight from the author, other godly writers and speakers, and God's Word itself, come nine more chapters covering subjects such as: showing respect, giving him room to grow (and even fail), building him up, having an attitude of gratitude, trusting God in times of marital conflict ("Pray. Pray. Pray. And pray some more."), finding full satisfaction in Christ, guarding against annoyances, forgiving, controlling your tongue, and giving it your all. Jennifer is particularly candid in sharing many experiences (the good, the bad, and the funny) from her own life, keeping the reader engaged and enhancing her message.

Jennifer's scholarly, yet tender and transparent treatment of God's beautiful design for marriage make this one book that touches the mind and, more importantly, the heart.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love Your Husband Love Yourself August 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
LOVE YOUR HUSBAND LOVE YOURSELF is not just another marriage book. Ms. Flanders practices what she "preaches" which became very clear in the reading of this book. Unlike most other books about marriage, this book starts out with "sex", teaching women about the importance of loving your husband physically, and explaining about the different sexual needs that a man has than his wife. As she says in the book, "You can find someone else to do his laundry, cook his food, clean his house, and raise his children, but you are the only one who can rightfully love him."

LOVE YOUR HUSBAND LOVE YOURSELF is divided up into two parts: Part One: Love Him Physically, and Part Two: Love Him Unconditionally. The first part is much longer than the second part and has several sections that explain how that loving your husband physically can do several things, such as:

1. Knit your hearts together
2. Protect against heart disease, cancer and other illnesses
3. Serve as an antidote for depression
4. Provides deeper sleep
5. Make you look and feel younger
6. Rid your home of stress and tension
7. Provide the couple with children
and more.

The book also stresses that in order for the husband to lead, the wife must be willing to follow. It also addresses learning how to control the tongue, the importance of building him up, and other such topics.

A lot of the subjects talked about in this book are common sense, but they are things that people (women) tend to not do. They are busy, husband does something they see as stupid, and they react accordingly. This is not appropriate, or Godly. Most of the book, as I said earlier, focuses on the importance of sex--to him. Which boils down to, do it, whether you feel like it or not.

If you are serious about improving your marriage, about making it stronger, and affirming the man you married, then LOVE YOUR HUSBAND LOVE YOURSELF is definitely a book to put on your must-read list. There are extensive end-notes and bibliographies included at the back of the book, in case you want to do more study on a certain area.

Jennifer Flanders has done it again! How she is able to even have time to write books with eleven children and everything else she does, it is hard to even imagine.

With all the research on oxytocin, I see the homeschool mom within her and know that she is a teacher at heart. Looking at the pictures on the book back, it looks like she has found the fountain of youth.

I did love the story about her touring a home and seeing a certain phrase on the pillow in the master bedroom; she recreated that scenario but in a much, kinder way for her own home.
She is sweet, funny and has given us a brutally honest look at her life. The first sentences in chapter 11, where she mentioned her mother would never have imagined that she would grow up and write a book extolling the virtues of sex shows her humor once again.

I'm sure her husband adores her and most men would be jealous of him, if they were given a chance to read this book. I actually have a few people in mind to give the book to, as the topic is needed in this day and age of "over-scheduling" everything in life and leaving the marriage relationship to be last on the list. From what I hear from many the marriage bed is mainly for sleeping. Jennifer's thought on the time taken by many women to get out of having sex are very interesting but I'll let you decide for yourself when you read the book.

This probably would be a good book to give as a wedding shower present. At age 60 I am a little old for some of the ways she suggests to "Love Your Husband, Love Yourself." but as always, she has done a lot of research and writes adding a lot of scripture to the mix. Jennifer is an adorable writer!

More About the Author

Jennifer Flanders graduated from Dallas Baptist University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. She completed two years of graduate work at SMU in the same field before she and her husband, Dr. Doug Flanders, started their family. She took her final final just two weeks before their first son was born. Since that time, the author has put her math background to good use by "staying home to multiply." (It has also come in handy as she's home schooled their twelve children, teaching counting to calculus, and everything in between).
You can read more from Jennifer by visiting her blog (http://lovinglifeathome.wordpress.com) where she writes about marriage and motherhood, or by visiting the Flanders' family website (http://www.flandersfamily.info) where she shares tips on organization, saving money, home schooling, and family fun. Jennifer often speaks on the same topics to community, church, and school groups. In her "spare" time, Jennifer enjoys reading, singing, playing with her kids and grandkids, visiting with her husband, and doing a wide variety of needle crafts.
