5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent listen, April 3, 2009
This review is from: Love at the End of the World (Dig) (Audio CD)
Super nice album, very easy to get into and listen to, and this is a direct testimony to excellent songwriting. This is the type album that blows away anything else on what could be considered the mainstream radio.

For instance, the song "oh maria" would most likely appeal the fans of the most poppy songs going, to say the "Maroon 5" crowd, but it is a super sweet indie rock song and its a real shame that there are albums this great that people will probably never hear.

So if you read this, rest assured that I hate albums that are filled with fillers and drivel, and that this album is a solid purchase. Just be warned, you will be sing "Lions of the kalahari" all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great album, June 3, 2009
This review is from: Love at the End of the World (Dig) (Audio CD)
As of this writing, there are three reviews on this terrific CD, and that bums me out. I wish there were hundreds of reviews, because this piece of work deserves to sell! Sell! Sell!.

I'm not on the band's payroll, and I never knew of Sam Roberts until I heard Detroit 97 on the radio, which was enough to get me to the store to buy the CD. As it turns out, that's now my least favorite song on the album, which will--as of June anyway--go down as my favorite new CD of the year. Sure, the songs are a bit derivative, but they steal from my favorite influences, Mick Taylor-Stones, Dylan, Crowded House, the Beatles, Death Cab for Cutie, and in the end, who cares if they're derivative or not? All music builds on itself. This music is so fresh, and smart, the vocals excellent, the songs are perfectly constructed, they breathe, they rock..and they were made by a real band, not some studio construction. The drums, the guitars..it sounds live, even though the vocal harmonies reveal plenty of overdubbing.

When so much of the music I hear on the radio today is absolutely pathetic, this is a breath of fresh air..I wonder why it isn't getting more airplay here in this country, from what I understand it debuted at #1 in Canada, which is where these guy's come from.

Anyway, great CD...I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album from Sam Roberts Band, April 18, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Love at the End of the World (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is yet another great album from an under-appreciated Canadian musician. "Love at the End of the World" is another gem full of catchy hooks, thoughtful and reflective lyrics, and good old straight-ahead rock n' roll. I my opinion, this is their best album to date. I loved the previous two LPs from this band, but I'll admit that I found the production of their second album "Chemical City" to be a bit muddy. That's not an issue at all on this recording, and the songs themselves are expertly crafted. I think that this band just keeps getting better, and I can't wait to hear what they do next.

Personal highlights for me include the title track, "Oh Maria," "Them Kids," "Words & Fire," "Up Sister," "The Pilgrim," and the unsuppressibly sunny finale "Detroit '67."

Check it out! It's definitely worth your time and money.

4.0 out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong with Sam Roberts!, March 14, 2010

I'll keep this short and sweet, if you like Sam Roberts don't wait to grab this album, you'll love it! Ok, for those who are new to the Sam Roberts scene, you are in for a treat. This guy makes great Beatle-esque music (and i HATE using the term Beatle-esque because it always falls short) which always delivers. This album is another album in a continuing career full of great albums. This is music done well in the vein of Sloan and perhaps the popper moments of BRMC. Sam Roberts has an easy on the ears kind of voice and the music rolls along with bits of rock and roll and a very solid melodic sense to it all. It is an album you'll enjoy if this is your kind of music because it just is GOOD ,high quality music, produced very well and solid lyrically.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Surprise, May 23, 2009

This review is from: Love at the End of the World (Dig) (Audio CD)
I had never heard of Sam Roberts until I saw his name mentioned in a magazine. Always looking to find new music I thought why not give it a try.

I am not sure how I would classify Love at the End of the World? It has a classic style but yet seems to be new and refreshing. It was not overly produced and still has a sound that I have not yet grown tired of. It reminds me of music that would sound good played at a smokey dive bar at the end of the night.

All in all I think this was a solid cd from an artist that I bought on a whim. I am very happy with the selection that I made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sam Roberts still going strong, January 19, 2009
I was so blown away by the first two albums Sam Roberts released, I paid a fistful of cash to buy this album directly from the band's website as soon as it was released. I was not disappointed. Nor will the SR fans who weren't all that happy with the Chemical City album: this one is a little heavier, a little grungier. It has a slight BRMC sound to it. There is still a mix of heavier rock, some mellow tracks, and it's all the real Sam Roberts sound.

Detroit '67 is my favorite song on the album (search the web for the music video), and Fixed to Ruin and the title track are just as good.
