5.0 out of 5 stars What's french for "This is an amazing album"?, December 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Love at Thirty (Audio CD)
Once upon a time, I heard of a band called The Like Young. In this band was a boy and a girl, which I later found out were also husband and wife. And I thought to myself, "Self, if that isn't the sweetest thing I've ever heard, then I don't know sweet."
Later on, self supplied me with information. In 2007, this sweet little husband and wife duo got divorced. It gets worse, the wife cheated. And I thought to myself, "Self, if that isn't the saddest thing I've ever heard, then I don't know sad."
This album is about the entire drama and trauma that happened, from suspicion to confrontation to eviction to absolution to evolution.

And Sweet Dancin' Zeus, the album "Love At Thirty" that came out of all that, this album in fact, is one of the most amazing pieces of musical accomplishment. It is beautiful from start to finish. Every song leads into the next in a flawless and perfectly synched sonic dance.

Favorite songs for me were: "Confidants" (track 2), "Friday the 13th" (track 7), "When One Is Together" (track 15).

But to be honest, I love this entire album.

BUY IT if you like: Indie, pop, and a sweet melancholy exploration of conflicting emotions. (thanks for reading)

5.0 out of 5 stars From personal tragedy to artistic triumph. Incredible album!, October 6, 2008

This review is from: Love at Thirty (Audio CD)
After his marriage abruptly crumbled, Joseph Ziemba (The Like Young/Wolfie/Busytoby) immersed himself in his studio and wrapped himself in sound as a means of making sense of the tragic events. With painstaking detail and compelling candor he offers up one of the most harrowing and soul baring song cycles in my collection. By twists and turns Ziemba mines a sonic palette that is many things - melancholic, melodic, dark, catchy, cinematic, ferocious, cathartic, accepting - while the story at the core of this album unifies the disparate sounds.

This is such a gloriously visual offering that for me the whole thing plays out as if on-stage or screen rather than coming from my speakers. Lost love and longing have rarely been expressed as well, as truthfully, or as vividly as on "Love At Thirty." This is a supremely brilliant, touching, musically rewarding album, that is as good as any I have bought in the last 10 years.

An affecting portrait of an artist. The healing power of sound. The beauty that comes from within.

Buy this. Then tell a friend. You'll be glad you did.
