You would think that the gypsies would use this show as a way to disprove prejudices... but quite the opposite happens.

Nothing against Danny personally, I just don't think it's right that he spent two weeks with a striper.

This show is fascinating in its own perverse way. The double standard and 'traditions' are just crazy. The wedding dresses are just insane. There was one I liked - it was a winter-themed dress, but that was it. The others are just so over the top. One of the things this show never mentioned was what happened to the dresses after the wedding, because there is simply no way one could ever fit one of these dresses in a closet and wait to pass it down to one's daughter or some such. How did this tradition even start? Oddly, the show is pretty mum on that.

One thing that really stuck out to me was the plight of one gypsy named Mellie (Millie?) Because of the double standard in these people's society, girls have very low job prospects because they are taken out of school at a young age, and not going to college (College is never encouraged for anyone, boy or girl, in this culture) So Mellie, who is about 21 or something, now works at a strip club. Working is shameful for a female gypsy, especially one such as stripping.

Here's the thing. The teenage girls on this show (some in their EARLY teens) dress like trashy sluts. At gypsy parties, some of them wear what look like lingerie, with frilly bra cups, midriff bared, etc etc, yet they're told that the outside world is filthy and trashy, yet I have never been to a party where the women dressed as trashy as the gypsy girls on the show. So anyway Mellie wanted money and to be able to support herself, and because of her lack of education, many job prospects were closed to her. Her sister constantly tries to dissuade her from stripping, even going so far as to show up at the strip club to try to shame her sister out of her job.

I could go on and on about this show, but what happened with Mellie really stood out to me.

You will probably cringe at the butchery of the English language and at all of
the 14 year old girls dropping out of school to clean mobile homes full of
ceramic figurines. You will marvel at the expense of the 90lb. dresses they
wear. The adults are like cartoon characters. You will be glued to the screen.

I don't watch TV; however, I ran across the preview of this episode. The bride-to-be looked like she was 14 years old. I had to watch the video to verify that. Pretty much worthless TV like all other American programming. Good to watch when your bored out of your mind.

The art on the dresses was fun to see but the people that they had on this reality show was totally insane. I can say that my family from both sides were Irish potato famine immigrants and many people came to the US as slaves. This Irish and English people that are on this show claim that they don't marry outside the English Irish clans of the first generations of potato famine people that came to the US.

The first season was great but it seems that the story lines go south for season 2. I found myself just flipping from one episode to the next just to see the dresses that were made and the end few minutes for the event surrounding the dress. Millie needs her own show. She's a dang hot mess and fun to watch in motion :)
