From Booklist

After her coach overturns, a mysterious stranger rescues the recently widowed Brianna Cameron and takes her back to his isolated cottage to recover from her injuries. The only information Brianna learns from the badly scarred stranger is that his name is Royce and he has come to the cottage seeking solitude after fighting in a terrible battle. By the time Brianna is recovered enough to return to her family, she is in love with the warrior whose fierce exterior hides a gentle soul. Royce surprises her with an offer of marriage, which Brianna joyfully accepts, but once she learns Royce's true identity, the news nearly tears the couple apart. As their wedding is finally about to take place, one more surprise awaits: Brianna's supposedly deceased abusive husband returns to claim his wife. While the story's slow start may deter some readers, this historical romance might be a good choice for those who enjoyed Fletcher's previous book, Isle of Lies (2002), featuring Brianna's brother, Ian, or for fans of romances set in the Scottish Highlands. Brianna Cameron had lived the past few years in fear - fear of the dreadful man she had married. He was known to abuse her often, with words and actions. When she learns of his death she is elated, for now she can have the freedom she had thought out of her reach forever. Until a carriage accident leaves her badly injured and alone, her two traveling companions killed.
Royce Campbell had retreated to a small cottage to recover from the wounds of his most recent battle, wounds of both the physical and psychological kind. While out hunting one day, he happened upon a destroyed carriage, two dead men, and one gravely injured woman. He takes her to his cottage to help her recover, giving up his much desired solitude for healing.
When Brianna awakens, and first sees the hideously scarred visage of her rescuer, she screams in fear and promptly passes out. Upon wakening, she slowly comes to realize Royce means her no harm and allows him to continue her care. As they spend this time isolated together over many weeks, she learns he is an honorable man who truly cares for her, nothing like her late husband. She grows to love this wonderful man, and he her, and they decide to wed as soon as she is well enough to travel home to her brother, Ian, her guardian since the passing of her husband.
Fate has other plans for these star-crossed lovers. What Brianna doesn't discover until later, is that Royce is a legendary warrior, feared by even the strongest of men. Upon learning this, she begins to doubt the man who has shown her nothing but love, respect, and kindness. Just as she comes to accept him for whom he is, fate intervenes once again, throwing a surprising twist at them, just after they have said their marriage vows.

Brianna, a recent widow, wakes from an accident to find herself being nursed by a frightening man with a scarred face. Yet, as she comes to know Royce, she finds that this warrior is in need of as much healing as she, and that he is handsome in ways she never dreamed.
Over the weeks of their mutual recuperation, the two grow closer together, falling in love with each passing day. When they return to the real world, Royce's greatest desire is to wed his lady. However, she is reluctant, believing herself barren, and also only recently recovered from living with a monstrous husband. Just when it appears that they could have all they dreamed of, Brianna and Royce's world is threatened by a terrible remainder of the past.
***** In a sensual and exciting retelling of Beauty and the Beast for adults, Ms. Fletcher charmingly weaves a magical tale of love and healing that will touch your heart. *****

I reread this book because I'm reading the author's collection of short stories, which carry on from the originals. Unlike some of the other negative reviewers, my problems don't lie with the beginning, in fact I really liked the beginning. I hated the middle. The h suddenly becomes whiny and awful and she was horrible to the H. The H was divine all the way through. This wasn't one of the author's best books.

Plot:
Brianna is forced by circumstance to rely on Royce. But when she learns his true identity will she be able to accept all she learnt as truth, or will she shy from him, and deny them both a HEA?

Comments:
- Historical (Medieval) Romance. Scotland, 1513, near the Isle of Mull.
- 6177 kindle locations, 341 pages
- m/f - not overly frequent, but reasonably explicit.
- Characters from Book 1 appear and play a role, however this book would comfortably stand alone. It picks up around 6 months after Book 1.
- Brianna is a survivor of domestic abuse. Her abuse was discussed in Book 1. It is a part of her by Book 2 - directs and colours her view of herself and of men. However, she has been "recovering" for some months and has rediscovered an inner strength.

Opinion:
"Aye, warriors have the strongest of souls. They protect the weaker souls and do what must be done for the sake of freedom. Life can be cruel without warriors; complete chaos would reign and no one would know peace." p.33, loc599

The first half of the book is rather unexpected in a Medieval; Snowed-in-with-him is a more contemporary trope. Trapped together as she recovers from severe injuries, forced to rely upon each other for all their needs. Strangers in all things but how they behave with each other. She a survivor of abuse, he needing to learn to love. Exploring healing, caring and forgiveness - of self and of others. Typically contemporary but timeless in this telling.

"Fate works in strange ways. To question it would be foolish; to accept it would be wise. I accept us without question." p.149, loc2626

Second half takes a more typical Medieval turn as Royce and Brianna accept their new love in the real world, and how to live with the choices made.

I liked the first half of this novel due to the sweet dialogue between the leads but the second half was almost a different novel mainly because the heroine transformed into an emotional, hardened woman.

Brianna is in a wagon accident and saved by hero Royce Campbell. He takes her back to his small house, nurses her tenderly to consciousness and is very gentle with her. Brianna is afraid of Royce at first since he has many scars yet to heal on his face making him appear frightening and unattractive. Brianna is afraid of men after her terrible first marriage; her deceased husband was cruel and manipulative blaming all his problems on Brianna.

While recuperating, Royce and Brianna have a lovely romance. Royce is a big fellow but his words are softly spoken. He keeps his past to himself and so does Brianna for the most part but she does share about her first marriage. These two fall in love very believably thorough long conversation and kind deeds.

Everything shifts when, Brianna's clan finds her and she goes back to her brother's keep. Royce wants to marry her and she has agreed but there is tension in the air and all Royce's past comes up to haunt Brianna. Seems Royce is a legendary warrior which for some reason makes Brianna furious. Her upset is that he kept this hidden from her so he can never be trusted ever again. Brianna turns into an incredibly stubborn woman. This is seen as endearing by her family members but absolutely annoying by this reader. Royce is still the same man yet Brianna just cannot let go of her stubborn nature, she almost revels in her opposition to Royce.

Meanwhile Royce is patiently waiting for her to come to her senses. He acts kindly toward her giving her space but Brianna wants to punish him.
