5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL CTHULHU MYTHOS TOME, April 10, 2009
This review is from: In Lovecraft's Shadow: The Cthulhu Mythos Stories of August Derleth (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully produced book, featuring excellent artwork by Stephen E. Fabian. The book is folio size (like a "coffee table book), and this enhances its appeal and the reproduction of the art. It contains all of the Cthulhu Mythos fiction written by Derleth under his own name. It's mostly hackwork, but for the Mythos fan the stories are entertaining, and that is exactly what they were meant to be. And yet some of them are good examples of Mythos fiction. "Beyond the Threshold" and "The Dweller in Darkness" have long been among my favourite Mythos tales. I loved them when I was a young fellow newly into Lovecraft, and they still contain enough charm to entertain me in my antient years.

There is a wonderful and intelligent introduction by Joseph Wrzos, the editor and designer of this book. He is himself a rather fascinating character of which I knew more. The book is divided into segments, thus:

Part 1: HOMAGE, THEOBALD
"Providence: Two Gentlemen Meet at Midnight" (a lovely poem in which Poe and Lovecraft meet as spectres in a Providence churchyard)

Part II: NORTH WOODS STORIES: ITHAQUA OF THE SNOWS & OTHERS
"The Thing That Walked on the Wind"
"Ithaqua"
"Beyond the Threshold"
"The Dweller in Darkness"

Part III: COLLABORATIONS: NON-LOVECRAFTIAN (by this the editor means that these are not the posthumous collaborations "with Lovecraft" that may be found in the book called THE WATCHERS OUT OF TIME & OTHERS)
"Lair of the Star-Spawn"
"Spawn of the Maelstrom"
"The Horror from the Depths"
"The House in the Oaks"

Part IV: THE OLD ONES ABROAD
"Those Who Seek"
"The God Box"
"Something from Out There"

Part V: THE MYTHOS IN VERSE
"Incubus"

Part VI: MISKATONIC VALLEY TALES: ARKHAM & ENVIRONS
"The Return of Hastur"
"The Passing of Eric Holm"
"The Sandwin Compact"
"Something in Wood"
"The Whippoorwills in the Hills"
"The House in the Valley"
"The Seal of R'lyeh"

Part VII: ON CTHULHU'S TRAIL: THE LABAN SHREWSBURY STORIES
"The House on Curwen Street: The Manuscript of Andrew Phelan"
"The Water from the Sky: The Disposition of Abel Kane"
"The Gorge Beyond Salapunco: The Testiment of Claiborne Boyd"
"The Keeper of the Key: The Statement of Nayland Colum"
"The Black Island: The Narrative of Hovarth Blayne"

Part VIII: CODA, EPISTOLARY
"On Reading Old Letters. For H.P.L." (unpublished poem that sees its first and only appearance in this book)

Part IX: THE MYTHOS IN MINIATURE:
"A Note on the Cthulhu Mythos" (This is the introduction to the Arkham House book, THE TRAIL OF CTHULHU [1962], and it contains Derleth controversial outlook on the Mythos. Derleth completely misunderstood and misrepresented Lovecraft's own perspective, which has caused much ill-feeling toward Derleth in the Lovecraft community.)

There follows a few pages of excellent notes by the editor. This is a beautiful book, superbly designed and illustrated. The full-page artwork is especially outstanding, giving us visions of the Mythos and magnificent portraits of August Derleth and H. P. Lovecraft. I believe the book is still available from Arkham House, Publishers at its original price of $75. If you are a Derleth fan, or in the mood for some light and entertaining (if occasionally silly) Cthulhu Mythos fiction, you can't do better than to buy this book. It is far more complete than the edition of Derleth's fiction (edited by Jim Turner and introduced by Ramsey Campbell) that was published by Barnes & Noble.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great pasticher, January 29, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: In Lovecraft's Shadow: The Cthulhu Mythos Stories of August Derleth (Hardcover)
No, August Derleth did not have the originality of his mentor, H.P. Lovecraft, but he could still raise a chill in his continuations of the Cthulhu mythos. Well worth reading, especially with the expert notes by Joe Wrzos.
