5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and Romantic Jazz, May 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Loved Ones (Audio CD)
This CD was in the CD player at a hotel I stayed at near New Orlean's French Quarter while working there for a month on business. What an introduction to jazz. From the opening piano chords of Delilah's theme to the last saxaphone blast, this album is a smooth and seamless ensemble of melodic tunes from America's formost musical family. The songs never fail to transform my mood even after listening to this CD over a hundred times.

Truly a wonderful mix of classic standards. I have given this CD as a gift to the serious jazz lover to the inexperienced....no matter what the range of music tastes, they will love it! It is honestly my most played CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, March 14, 2000
This review is from: Loved Ones (Audio CD)
I Loved the Playing&vibe on this disc.Mr.Ellis Marsalis is a great Piano Player.he has a solid touch.Branford who is my favorite Musician in the family plays his usual many styles with his Pops and makes this disc a must have.Branford sounds good with anyone from Miles Davis,Sting,Public Enemy,Blf at times etc.. but he saves his best when playing with his Pops.a wonderful Disc.

This is a great CD, only problem is, the sample names for this CD are not of this CD, it's from another one.

I bought this one on a whim but its now certainly one of my favourite albums. This one is an absolute classic!! Its so simply arranged and uncluttered; just the horn and the piano. This is a keeper for any jazz fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean Jazz, October 27, 2011
This review is from: Loved Ones (Audio CD)
I love listening to this album. It is great to hear father and son come together to create such a great listening experience. As another reviewer said, the album is very uncluttered and I think that is what I like most about it. It is a clean album that plays some beautifully arranged versions of great songs & standards. The CD flows through the tracks and it doesn't sound like any song is out of place at all. If you're a fan of the Marsalis family, this is a definite buy, but this is an album I think everyone can enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Marsalis CD: "Loved Ones", January 18, 2008

It's been a few years since I've been able to listen to music while working -- just haven't been able to focus like I used to, even if there are no vocals to cause distraction. What a wonderful and pleasant surprise when I discovered that I could enjoy this CD while working! The music is calm but not boring. There are several up-tempo pieces but they don't cause my mind to wander from my work. I could (and do!) listen to this CD almost every day and have purchased copies for several friends and family members. Definitely 5 stars!

Great arrangements of familiar tunes. Ellis and Branford have a wonderful musical rapport, sounding comfortable together, and open to creating, exciting improv.

I was pleasantly surprised at the synergy that father and son brought to bear with this album. Great ballads, a great listen.
Round out your Branford Marsalis collection with this one, you won't regret it.
