Papa Roach's new album does not (in my opinion) compare to "Infest". I am, however, glad they got rid of [most] of the rap. Now I will review the songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of lovehatetragedy, June 24, 2002
By
This review is from: Lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
In this CD, Papa Roach have dropped the rapping in every song save for the single "She Loves Me Not". I don't know weather this is good or bad. Some songs were almost certainly written with rap in mind, namely tracks 6,8,10, and maybe 3. Anyhoo, here's the song by song.

M-80: All in all a good song, though a bit confusing at first. Good rock anthem.

Life is a bullet: Probably the worst song on the album, but gets the emotions through well.

Time and Time Again: Good song, I like the beginning, and the chorus.

Walking through Barbed Wire: Easily the best song on the album. Kind of scary thought, mathcing the lyric "I would die for you" with the fact that it's about a dead dog.

Decompression Period: Slow at first, but then it picks up.

Born with Nothing, Die with Everything: Great song to headbang to. Love the beginning.

She Loves Me Not: One of the best songs on the album, and the only one with rap. Good cymbals.

Singular Indestructable Droid: Cyborgs kick [bottom]. So does this song. This was inspired by the DJ from Slipknot (get the Sid acronym?)

Black Clouds: Great song, inspiring to anyone who suffers from depression. Captures the essence.

Code of Energy: Don't quite get the lyrics, but you can still rock out.

lovehatetragedy: Has a bit of an epic feel. I like the slow part. I have it stuck in my head right now. Good lyrics to.

Gouge Away: Bit weird, but good. Drug reference, shield your virgin ears.

Never Said It: Weird lyrics, great instumentals.

Overall worth buying, in my opinion. Very different from Infest, but change is inevitable (except from a vending machine). The drums seem to be a little quieter, and the guitars a little less staticky, less rough. If you're to closed-minded to appreciate an excellent album just because they are no longer embracing the nu metal fad de jour, rap-rock, then it's your loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars On Second Thought........, July 23, 2002
By
Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
.....this album is really better than I had thought at first. I wrote a review giving it only four stars. (Well, actually 4 and a half stars.) This album is really a lot better than I gave it credit. I've had a chance to listen to this album more and more, and the more I hear it...the more I like it.

Unlike the first album, "Infest," "Lovehatetragedy," steers away from rock-rap and just dives into rock. With the exception of the last verse of "she loves me not," there is virtually no rapping at all. That may anger some fans....and yet, it may make fans more happier. I know it did for me. The lead singer really does have a great voice, and he takes advantage of it more than on the first album.

The songs are written a lot better, especially lyric wise. They're more deeper and emotional, even darker at times. The guitars also have improved more, as well as the drumming.

EVERY song on this album is good. My favorite songs still have not changed from the previous review, with the exception of adding "gouge away" to that list. But really, this is an album you can put on and not worry about what song it's on. A great album to play when driving! I still think that the only weak point of the album is the length. It's not even fourty minutes long. It would've been nice to have it longer. Then again, when do you get to hear an album with no bad songs? So I guess that makes up for it.

If you really like the group, I suggest getting the limited editon of this album. It has two extra songs, which are awesome, and it includes two live videos for the computer.

I've noticed that some people have been complaining about the "whining" that this band does in the songs. Dude, this is what rock and music is all about. How else are these guys going to get their emotions out? Isn't that why they wanted to be in a band in the first place? They may be famous, but they still have problems just like you and me. Just because you have it all, doesn't mean you HAVE it all, you know.

So, I've upgraded my rating of "Lovehatetragedy" to five stars. It really deserves it, and should've been the rating on my first review. Sorry about that. It's nice to see that the boys are starting to leave rap-rock and just play great rock music. Heavy, and brutally honest and emotion packed, "Lovehatetragedy," is a great album. If they keep it up, it looks like they will be around for a long time. It'll be something to see how these guys change when they come out with a third album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its actually good..., July 11, 2003
This review is from: Lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
I don't see whats wrong with this album. Its very good. Most of the songs are great.I don't own Infest, but I heard that there was alot of rapping on there and on here they canned it.Thats a good thing.I don't wan't to hear 'The artist formely known as Dick' rap alot on here(the only song that he raps a little on is the single, "She Loves Me Not").Yeah, they are kinda mainstream...But they are still very good.Yes,I would recomend this album if your a rock music fan(and try to get this limited edition version, too because the extra tracks are awesome!).So,go for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars New Sound...I miss the old..., August 28, 2002
This review is from: Lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
Papa Roach's new album does not (in my opinion) compare to "Infest". I am, however, glad they got rid of [most] of the rap. Now I will review the songs.
1.M-80 (Explosive Energy Movement)-2/5-Punkier than the rest of the tracks, this song would be fairly good if it wasn't for the stupid lyrics.
2.Life Is A Bullet-4/4-A slower song, about someone "living life in the fsat lane". It's good, but gets boring after hearing it too many times.
3.Time And Time Again-5/5-Rappier than all the other tracks, only it's not rappy enough to be called...rap. Whatever, it's just good.
4.Walking Thru Barbed Wire-3/5-This is a pretty boring song. That's all I can say. Sounds no different from the rest.
5.Decompression Period-2/5-I always skip this one. It's melodic, and I usaully like melodic stuff, but this dosen't stand out at all.
6.Born With Nothing, Die With Everything-5/5-My favorite song on the album. Good guitars, bass, drums, singing, lyrics, everything.
7.She Loves Me Not-4/5-...Yeah, you've heard it...
8. Singular Indestructible Droid-5/5-Another cool track with good lyrics. I like the chorus.
9.Black Clouds-3/5-Slow song, like "Decompression Period", only it reminds me of Crazy Town's "Black Cloud" too much, and that song annoys me.
10.Code Of Energy-?-5-I haven't listened to this that much yet.
11.Lovehatetragedy-0/5-I am sorry, but nothing stands out to me in this song at all.
-------------------------Bonus Tracks----------------------------
12.Gouge Away-0/5-The singing in this is horrible, so horrible I've only been able to stand 30 seconds of the song. This should've been a normal track, that way they could've gotten a good song for the bonus.
13.Never Said It-0/5-...See previous.

Overall, this is an Ok Cd when noty compared to "Infest", which I think is better. The songs on here all sound pretty much the same, and the bonus tracks are nothing special, AND the special computer bonus footage dosen't work on my computer, so I'm pretty mad about that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Power From the Roach, August 2, 2002
This review is from: Lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
It was difficult to have a follow up album which, was as good as Infest, but, Papa Roach almost made it. The albums rocks from begining to end with pure energy tracks in which the vocals of Coby shine. Angst, frustration and sense of rebellion are feelings which one can almost feel in all the songs on this album. All this, added up with their lyrics make Papa Roach, unique in the bunch of all Nu-Metal bands.

'She Loves Me Not', 'Black Clouds' and 'Time and Time again' are probably the best songs on this album, even though all 11 tracks deserve to be on this album. Why no rap? Well actually, I wasn't dissapointed about the 'no-rap' on this album, because I've felt that Papa Roach always were, are, and probably always will be, a hard rock band anyway ...

This album is a must for all hard rock music lovers. Lyrics are a bit negative and depressing, but, after all, thats a sad and realistic truth of what life is all about. Coby's performance is 5 star ... a voice transmitting pure anger and rage, second to none, since the days of Kurt Cobain.

A 4-star rated album for me, but only because I liked Infest a little bit more and since that was a 5-star album, I couldn't give this one 5 stars too, but we're almost there. Good work guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars DUDE! THE ROACH RULES THE NU-METAL SCENE!, July 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
This was my first Papa Roach album I got. I first saw their Video for Last Resort. It was so awesome. Now I got Lovehatetragedy. Here's a list of songs.

M-80(Explosive Energy movement)- awesome song. What makes it Original is that it has a raw no dubbed sound as if it was done in one take.

Life is a Bullet- A song with very emotional lyrics

Time and Time Again- Loud yet somewhat tradional.

Walking thru barbed wire- another loud yet traditional track.

Decompression period - Jerry Horton is a great guitarist but he also does a good job on the Resonator.

Born with Nothing, Die with everything- this is my favorite song period.

She Loves Me Not- Good song but a bit overplayed.

Singular Indestructable Driod- Heaviestsong on the Album. Has strange Native American chants througout it.

Black Clouds- My least favorite. But i never said it's the worst.

Code of Energy- has the best guitar work on the cd.

lovehatetragedy- A very good song. It has a lot of meaning in it.

Gouge Away- Nothin' really special. Papa Roach did not write this song.

Never Said it- A good ending track.

I say this album rules. It's Papa Roach at their best...

Could they not think of any lyrics because four of their songs are nothing but repeating the same chrous over and over and over again and they're not even that good of a quote either. Other than "She Loves Me Not" which is a great single the CD lacks what Papa Roach once was. I loved these guys and I was really excepting something huge but the songs are repetitive and lack the diversity that Papa Roach had on their first album. The first album they were all over. Each song had it's own flavor and flare completely different from the last. I'm very disappointed and I would suggest DL most of the songs before you buy the album otherwise you'll get ripped.
