Ok...Lets see where do we start. Is it the elegance, the wonderful story, the yaoi, or the rumors....Well how about we start with the basis of the story...

A boy enters his sixth grade class room to be greeted by his teacher with that scene you see that this boy is greatly independent. He instantly develops his first fan girl yukio(just first off I want to apologize I'm American and I also have horrible spelling. So I will butcher these names.) She falls for him instantly...He being in sixth grade and disliking making friends, He could care less that she likes him. When leaving school the teacher confronts them and expresses her concern for him and he acts nonchalant and runs off. He meets an adult who grabs him by the arm and forces an conversation(gently forces) within that converstation he confesses that he was friends with the boys brother. The sixth grade boy ritzuka's brother seimi was murdered. So naturally the boy is taken with this stranger. He goes off with the adult to make memories(taking photos). While taking photos they bring the story line in about the fighters and sacrifices also with the fighters names. The strangers name is soubi(which I can spell ^^) His code name is beloved who was seimi's fighter unit, and seimi was soubi's sacrifice.

Sacrifices and fighters basically are this. A fighter uses words to cast spells such as "rip" "tear" and even as complex as "retreat as birds carried off...." The spells are enchanting to hear and the art that follows the spells are wonderful. And sacrifices take the damage for the fighter unit. When they are hurt they are restricted to some extent, arms chained down, collars chaining the victims. When they are completely restricted they lose.

Well upon their talk they encounter another fighter unit who wants the sixth grade to come with them, soubi fights the people and denies them taking him. The boy can't figure out within the fight ,who the bad guy is if it's soubi or if it's the other fighters. But upon the next fight he sees that their organization was that who killed his brother.

The boy is growing up and maturing and his mom is trying to prevent it by claiming multi personalities. If I give to much more of the story it will be spoilers but it gets much better

The art of this show is so wonderful. The voices are in Japanese. I dislike subbing a lot of I didn't mind it in this case. But there is a side bit of the soubi being twenty and male falling for ritzuka a sixth grade male. Yoai and illegal but it's not bothersome. It's kind-a a key part of the story but the story really does not dwell on it. It's more so as if they are close friends who try to protect each other and they kiss only a few times in the story they are both androgynous so it won't offend those. No nudity.

The story died on episode thirteen...it was sad ended no warning and should no have ended the manga kept up. Anime died. No sign of any more to come but in the original series imported from japan I got back a few years ago(well I borrowed from a friend.) on the last episode it said something about fundings died and could not continue so rumor is they will pick up later but dunno when.

I would suggest this to nearly everyone

The story is sweet. There is a lot of same gender (kissing boy/boy and girl/girl) so if that's not your thing you will not like this. I loved the fantasy elements and just got into the story. I only wish there were more episodes.

First off, love, love loved this series! The manga was awesome, and the anime was amazing. The artwork, the storylines, everything. Bought it for the price on Amazon... def worth every penny.

Ritsuka school student who had lost his older brother. Never knowing what happened to him, he searches for the truth. Then one day he meets Soubi a older gentleman who tells him that he knew his older brother and knows about his death. From that point on, life changes for Ritsuka. He and Soubi develop an almost romantic relationship.... even to the point that they both can hurt each other's feelings easily. Eventually Ritsuka learns that Soubi was his brother's fighter partner... and that Ritsuka's real name is "Loveless". Well, from then on they battle many different people and their partners to get to the truth behind Ritsuka's brother's death.

Thats as much as the story I'll give you. You'll love the characters, you'll love the plot, and you'll love the animation. However there's only 12 episodes of this series. That's right... it's UNFINISHED. And I'm pretty sure this is all of the anime they'll make of the manga series. T_T Everything is kinda slow paced however even for a short series.... and the ending just kinda... never really happens... instead they close it with a random episode. XD But all said and done, def a 5. As someone told me: "It shouldn't be called Loveless, it should be called Love."

I got this item for my GF for Christmas, because we both liked it, and she wanted it quite a bit. There was an initial botch in getting it, which is sort of silly. The vendor vended it to me before Christmas, which amazed me: I thought it would come afterwards. But I didn't get it. The mailperson left it outside, where a lovely neighbour waltzed off with it. So after Christmas, we called, and they sent it out immediately; we received it within a couple days. And it was well worth the wait.

There are minor differences betwixt the show and manga, and the show essentially stops after twelve episodes at volume four. However, the show remains a pretty faithful adaptation of the original work. The character dynamics are intact and fantastic, and the Zeroes are delightful. Soubi is a creeper like he should be, and his sensei is even more of a creeper. Ritsuka is adorable as ever. The music and animation are gorgeous. In all, a delightful purchase.

*****Spoilers for both the manga and the anime are contained*****

I have been following the manga for almost a decade and have adored it since the very beginning. When I found out there was to be an anime when the manga was just starting to take off I was a little skeptical, as would anyone who reads manga. The biggest problem with turning a manga into an anime is that in order to make money and keep with the times the producers spit out animes during the popularity boom of the manga, whether that manga is even close to completion or not. This anime was made about three years into the manga and as of, almost, 2012 the manga is still droning on and leaving readers very confused as to what in the heck is going on, and why it's necessary to include all of these little side stories that do little to move the story forward.

That being said, this is about the anime, not the manga. This anime was based off the first few volumes of the manga and follows them rather closely. There are a few subtle changes, such as Ritsuka licking the blood from Soubi's neck in the manga instead of kissing him on the neck in the anime. Contrary to popular belief, this manga is NOT yaoi, nor was it meant to be. The authoress has even mentioned this fact at conventions in both Japan and America. This anime does deal with an unusual relationship between a 12 year old boy and a 20 year old man (keeping in mind that the national age of consent in Japan is 13 unless a certain area has made a change). The man is a broken individual who shows symptoms of Stockholm Syndrome (this is shown more in the manga than the anime) and needing to be lead about as if he is an animal. The boy is also a broken individual who has lost memories from the age of 10 and prior. Both of these individuals need someone who they can rely on and through fate or whatever it happens to be each other.

This anime is not a child's story. It deals with depressing and dark matter with only a few comedic pieces scattered throughout. One episode was included to be more comedic because of the amount of darkness in this series. There is sensual kissing between two female characters. There is kissing between an underage boy and a man that is neither innocent or sensual, but could be leading up to a boy/boy relationship later on. There is fighting using words rather than fists and weapons. The fight scenes are beautifully choreographed and the words are powerful. And for those who want the romance there are a number of characters who have an unrequited love revolving around the two main characters who do not know real love and thus do not know how to respond, though they are starting to see love within each other near the end of the series.

I give this series a 4 out of 5 because the show should not have been made until the manga was complete (none of them should). On the other hand, with what the writers and producers have available they did a good job. The final episode does leave it open for speculation, which has really annoyed a number of people out there. If someone doesn't mind using some imagination to 'see' what could happen after the series then I recommend this story to everyone. If an individual doesn't like to be left guess I suggest finding a different anime and also stay away from the manga until it's complete because after a decade the series is just a little confusing. Also keep in mind this DVD is in Japanese with subtitles, meaning the watcher needs to know Japanese or read the subs in order to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why can't there be more????, July 30, 2011

It's so hard to review this series! I adore it - adore Soubi and Ristuka and the whole universe they live in. But I'm also left at the end wanting more, and feeling as though I'll never get it! So, I'm beginning to see the downside of yaoi, and it's not because the storylines aren't good! It's because Japanese animation studios can't seem to finish a series before abandoning it. Other than the few 2-3 part OVA's which are complete stories (and there are some incredible ones!), my favorite yaoi mangas translated into anime always seem to end before they really get going (with the possible exception of Junjo Romantica) - at least there is some resolution. And my beloved (yeah, I do LOVE Loveless), is no exception.

Loveless is a beautifully drawn and engaging story. It also pushes the limits of uncomfortable topics such as sexuality, what love really is, and the kind of connection two people can have in spite of their age differences. You WANT to understand. You WANT to/NEED to have the answers. But because this lovely anime was created before there is any conclusion to the mysteries in the manga, there really is no good ending and no second season to look forward to. And no, as of the date of this review, there still is no conclusion (or many answers) in the manga itself. So we have a gorgeously animated series, but the ending is just not satisfying. There's no second season, and no real resolution to the mystery of Soubi and Ritsuka and the sentokous (fighting pairs).

Maybe the problem is that, with an incomplete manga series, the anime just can't sustain things while we wait for more story from the mangaka. Maybe it's just that there aren't enough fans for yaoi anime, and the studios drop them. But it's so disappointing, especially as in Loveless' case, where you've got a great storyline going, but they "wrap" everything up in one not-so-satisfying last episode (which really doesn't wrap up!). I'd almost rather wait 5 years and get a complete story, than want to tear my hear out at the end not knowing how things will conclude. Almost, but I love these two characters too much not to watch, after all!

So, from a purely visual perspective, I loved this boxed set! Glad I bought it. I loved the artwork, and the voices are fabulous. That said, I'm sad at the end, that we won't see any future for Ritsuka and Soubi, except maybe eventually in the manga and in the alternative universe of fan fiction.

Yes, after that rant, this series still is worth watching. Then check out the manga and we'll all be waiting for answers!

The series itself is great. It's very interesting. My only problem is the subtitles. Some of the translations, to me, seem a bit off.

Its a very tender and sad story at the same time Ritsuka and Soubi
truly need each other because they both has tragic past.
before I purchased it I seen it with Netflix and I really feel bad
that it wasn't more of it because the ending leaves you with a????
big question.
Now that I started to read the graphic novel for sure they have a lot of material for new DVD's.
Of course its still frustaiting because the Manga goes only to book
eight and you wonder how it will end.
Well thats my opinion
Edith [I love Anime] .
