The Best Lush CD ever? Maybe...,
By Donald R. Brinson (New Orleans, LA United States) - See all my reviews

I fell in love with this CD when I first heard it and even now I contemplate buying another copy even though I have one. This CD is a natural progression from the early "shoegazers" music which mixed the vocal level somewhere below the instruments to a more conventional mix where the vocals are featured, and what lovely vocals they are! Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson are inspired and melodic. The music rocks and ranges from power pop to slower, but powerful songs. But its the lyrics where this really shines-these women sing of hard-learned lessons of love, friendship and life, and display a maturity not previously seen. It reminds me of No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom (without the ska) in its depiction of raw nerves and a tender, wounded soul. I don't think I've captured more than a pale reflection of the album, but I hope you'll give it a try!

If you are a close observer to the british-pop music scene, you can't do nothing but feel sorry for the case of Lush.Spending the biggest part of their career in the background while other surely inferior bands like Sleeper,Meanswear and Shed Seven were winning more and more publicity every day,Lush kept recording really good records withought though finding someone to buy them.Things finally changed with the release of Lovelife, which did suprisingly good sales. Then bad luck stroke again. The drummer died in a car accident and the group eventually broke up.As for the quality of this album, power pop at it's best is what you'll get here.Take for example "Ladykillers", a super fun song where Miki, the bands lead singer simply trashes the egocentric behaviur of men in relationships."Save your breath for someone else and credit me with something more, when it comes to men like you i know the score i've heard it all before"she sneers.Or listen to the spicy arguement in "Ciao!" between her and her supposely ex Jarvis Cocker, the singer of Pulp.Ofcourse there's more to lush's agenda than boyfriend troubles.Just listen to the pure lyric-genius of "Heavenly Nobodies" a song about fake idols. This is probably the best album recorded by a british band in 1995.You might have never heard of Lush but take the risk and discover Lovelife. You 'll be suprised how much you'll enjoy it.

This is a good deal for a good, solid album. Lush has great harmonies and I love their use of sleighbells and electronica on this record. Very mellow, but fun.
