4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly light for a comedy about prostitutes.
Sixteen year old, Jake (tara Subkoff) is abandoned by her mother. She comes to LA to find her long lost loser sister Darlene (Kristy Swanson). Darlene doesn't want anything to do with Jake so now Jake is stuck in LA and homeless. Jake bumps into Darlene's neighbor Marci (Sandra Bernhard) who shares an apartment with three other girls, Coco (Loretta Divine), Teddy...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good performances, but....
...the story is a bit depressing overall. Sandra Bernhard is her great, tough/soft bitchy self, and Boston Public's Loretta Devine is wonderful (as usual) in a supporting role. Unless you are a die-hard fan of Sandra, Loretta or Kristy Swanson, I would pass on this movie.

Sixteen year old, Jake (tara Subkoff) is abandoned by her mother. She comes to LA to find her long lost loser sister Darlene (Kristy Swanson). Darlene doesn't want anything to do with Jake so now Jake is stuck in LA and homeless. Jake bumps into Darlene's neighbor Marci (Sandra Bernhard) who shares an apartment with three other girls, Coco (Loretta Divine), Teddy (Renee Humphrey) and Bambi (Sahara Lotti). Marci feels bad for the girl so she lets Jake stay for awhile, problem is the girls live above a massage parlor and guess what? They give "massages," if you know what I mean. One thing leads to another, and pretty soon Jake joins in profession and the drama kicks in.

A pretty cute film. Actors did a great job. Subkoff as Jake is likeable, Bernhard as Marcy is the nicest we've ever seen her, Loretta Divine as Coco, is hilarious as always, newcomer Renee Humphrey as Teddy plays her slacker part quite well and newcomer Sahara Lotti as the airheadish Bambi is hilarious and quite entertaining.

I recommend this film.

"Lover Girl" is great. The characters are developed, the pace is strong, and it's easy to enjoy. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. Tara Subkoff (Jake) is superb. The only bad things? It's for mature audiences. Oh yeah, and Sandra Berhnard.
