5.0 out of 5 stars A cool Mariah single!
I don't know why everyone hates Glitter, the album Glitter and any of the singles because Mariah's voice is amazing and I actually like the movie and CD because, unlike most people, have an open mind and can appreciate it! I love Loverboy and all the remixes, all 9 remixes that were made, especially the Club Of Love Remix and the MJ Cole London Dub Mix! A few of the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Loverboy: Callin' all Sugah Daddies!
It's July 2001. My 14th birthday is drawing near and I'm positive my parents are getting me Janet Jackson's All For You and Aaliyah's self-titled record for my presents (which turned out to be true). I'm also excited to check out Mariah's video for her latest single Loverboy.

I plop down in front of the screen with a big smile on my face and then.... My...

A few of the remixes, MJ Cole Remix, MJ Cole Instrumental, and MJ Cole London Dub Mix, even have this Jazzy sound to it and it makes it very unique! The song Loverboy is very unique! I wish people would just stop saying that Glitter and the Glitter CD flopped because anyone with real taste would love Mariah going back to the 80's sound and any REAL Mariah fan would appreciate the album and movie like I do!! I actually cried during Glitter because Mariah did such a wonderful job and she showed all these emotions! It's just really sad that so many people have to put down the most beautiful, powerful, soaringly 7 octave voice in the world!! Thank You So Much Mariah for making another wonderful album, Glitter, and for the movie Glitter, I am your TRUE fan until the end of time!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loverboy Was Her Last Minute Choice For Glitter Single!!!, April 23, 2006

She did have a slammin' new single in the works but it was lifted by a certain beat-biter dope style taker.....J.LOW was given the tune from Tommy Mottola who gave it to producer Irv Gotti who then had J.LOW and JaRule use the track for their 2001 hit...

Mariah at the last minute did have to throw together a new single since hers was stolen..The same thing happened to Usher in 2005...and by J.LOW

3.0 out of 5 stars Loverboy: Callin' all Sugah Daddies!, February 24, 2011

It's July 2001. My 14th birthday is drawing near and I'm positive my parents are getting me Janet Jackson's All For You and Aaliyah's self-titled record for my presents (which turned out to be true). I'm also excited to check out Mariah's video for her latest single Loverboy.

I plop down in front of the screen with a big smile on my face and then.... My mouth drops open and my eyes can't believe what they're seeing. Mariah, wearing a red bandana as a top and a pair of teeny tiny hot pants, is flailing her arms around like a fish out of water and HER EYES! They're like freakin' saucers they're so BIG! She's just runnin' around like she's hopped up on something and her boobs threaten to pop out at any moment. Don't even get me started on the kaleidoscope sequences. "What in the hell was that?!", I think as I turn off the tv and try to make sense of the hot mess I've just witnessed.

Not too long after, Mariah collapses at her mother's home and takes some much needed R&R. We all know about the failure of Glitter so I won't even bother with all that. Maybe 4 or 5 years later, I'm at a friend's house and she's playing the Glitter record. Loverboy is on and we reminisce about how awful the video was. Then something funny happens. For the life of me I can't get the "I wanna, I wanna/I need a, I need a/A lover, A loverboy for me!" bit out of my head. As much as I disliked the video, I'd never given the actual song a chance. It's infectious as hell. Inane, but undeniably infectious.

Riding on a sample of Cameo's delicious 80's hit Candy, Mariah is downright giddy over her Loverboy. This dude must be more impressive than her Dreamlover, Fantasy man, and Honey put together since the starry eyed diva is willing to take things a step further. "I got myself a lover/Who knows what I like/When he invites me over/I come every time.... He's quite a bit of heaven/When he comes inside!" The members of Cameo throw in a few lines from Candy ("Strawberry/Raspberry/All those good things/Diamonds and gumdrops/That's what you seem to me") as Mimi's chirpy high notes close the song.

Too bad the remix sucks. Thankfully the original sample is left alone, but Ludacris, Shawna, and Da Brat make unwelcome appearences with the most ridiculous rhymes ("You got itchy balls from where I blow that"). Say what now?! Cameo's singing is greatly reduced and it's a crime. That guest spot is what enhanced the original imo.

While Loverboy is far from Mariah's best uptempo singles, it has it's charm (I even like the video now!). It's silly and free so turn off your brain and let go. Just avoid the remix at all costs.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's cute, August 4, 2001

Despite all the critics placed on this song, i somehow find that it sounds cute and unique. I fell in love with it and i like more that i like heartbreaker or honey. Loverboy is, to me, a new kind of rhythm that Mariah has done. It may not sound good to other listeners, but i highly reccomend you this cause it really sounds catchy and unique.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Effort, But Not What I Would Expect, July 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Loverboy (Audio CD)
Mariah, it would seem, is at an impasse, career-wise. Now that she's left her old record label, she's on to new pastures, and this first single gives us a glimpse as to what her new album will look like. While Mariah fans will rejoice, there is not, unfortunately, much to rejoice about.True fans will know how remixes of Carey's singles can be sublime experiences. In the past, her work with hot DJ's and in-demand producers has made the remixes worthwhile. However, the single version of "Loverboy" just falls flat--instead of utilizing a great sample, it relies too much on the source and comes off as a lackluster remake of Cameo's "Candy." The Loverboy Remix (track 2) is just a way to get Da Brat onto the song to increase the "hip" factor. The two true remixes (the "MJ Cole Remix" and the "Club Of Love" remix) are disappointing, and don't offer anything very substantial. Yes, they work on a level for a lesser artist, but the MJ Cole Remix comes off as a slow extended version of the single version, and the Club of Love remix is a remix with a faster bpm, but little, if anything, to distinguish it from anything else in a club. After so many excellent remixes ("Fantasy," "Heartbreaker," "Honey") I hope there's more to look forward to on "Glitter." It's Mariah, so it's of good quality, but we really had a right to expect more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Little Variation From Type, July 17, 2001

Continuing her own personal(and seemingly endless)tradition of kicking off her one word-titled albums with one word-titled first singles, Mariah Carey unleashes the first single from her upcoming album GLITTER. Following in the aforementioned tradition, 'Loverboy' is an uptempo, sample-heavy(this time from Cameo)pop/funk shuffler in the vein of 'Dreamlover','Fantasy',et al. As is typical, this translates to a pretty great record, though you can't help but think that Carey is coasting musically at this point. The public seems to think so, as this song is getting virtually no airplay. The remix, featuring Ludacris and Da Brat, among others, doesn't really add anything to the original, not like Jay-Z did for her previous 'Heartbreaker'. The MJ Cole remix, based on the two-step dance craze sweeping Britain, is quite good, and longtime remix collaborator David Morales submits three typically superb remixes, complete with re-recorded vocals--something Carey should be commended for, as she remains one of the very few artists that do so for dance mixes. Overall, a fairly sturdy addition to Carey's singles catalog.
