Pacific Overtures,

"Lovers in Japan" is one of the few brilliant highlights of Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Rhythmically undergirded by the traditional shamisen, it is at once dreamy and rockin'. It's reminiscent of Coldplay's earlier days, when Chris Martin was belting out thoughtful anthems, like "Clocks" and "Yellow." It blends traditional Eastern music with alternative Western rock. It's a heady blend. It's sonic Guinness mixed with sake. "Lovers in Japan" is wistful, hopeful--and a woefully overlooked B-side. "Lovers in Japan" is a song you'll love!

Simple Lovers,

When it comes down to Coldplay, they've really made a lot of strides within their songs this past year, on Viva La Vida. They definitely had shown that they still have got the stuff. But their latest single isn't actually their best one from the actual bunch. Lovers In Japan, doesn't bring in the appeal from the lyrics that Chris Martin had penned for the song, doesn't match the appeal of the melodic and simplistic tone of the song which alone sets the staple from Coldplay noblely, which I was surprised. All in all, the piano notes work well, but I just wish there was more to the song to match the appeal Coldplay had captured with Violet Hill and Viva La Vida.Song: C |
