Book Description

March 27, 1994
Lovers is pure Krantz, an  intoxicating dance of love lost, stolen, and found  among women and men who lure each other with potent  combinations of money, talent, ambition, and  passion. Chief among them is irresistible Gigi Orsini,  the high-spirited, merry, adventurous creature who  grew up into enchanting womanhood in Scruples Two.  Now Gigi is working as a copywriter in a new Los  Angeles advertising agency, with her creative  "teammate," David Melville, a brilliant young  art director who joins her in seeking new  accounts. The agency is headed by dashing Archie Rourke,  humorous Byron Bernheim and the severely difficult  beauty, Victoria Frost, daughter of the famed  Millicent Frost Caldwell who, with her husband Angus  Caldwell, owns one of New York's largest  advertising agencies. Ben Winthrop, a proper Bostonian and  an enormously successful mall builder, attempts to  capture Gigi's quicksilver affections, although  his fierce contenders for the same prize include  both David Melville and the dominating film director,  Zach Nevsky. Meanwhile, Billy Winthrop Ikehorn  Orsini Elliott, the unforgettably impulsive heroine  of Scruples, and her new husband,  the great charmer, Spider Elliott, are busy with  their own fascinating lives, as are Gigi's father,  canny film producer Vito Orsini, and her best  friend, the ravishing Sasha Nevsky, none of whom can  be forgotten from Scruples and  Scruples Two. Lovers  completes all the stories set in motion in the  first two novels, yet it stands entirely on its own  as a slice of life in the exciting years of 1983  and 1984.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Once again Krantz animates her trademark fantasies: power and wealth, sex scenes in which women dominate, designer names and glamorous locales. And as usual, characters from earlier books appear to spice up the plot; here Gigi Orsini takes center stage. Stepdaughter of the now remarried Billie Ikehorn ( Scruples ), friend of Sasha ( Scruples Two ) and natural daughter of movie producer Vito Orsini, rash, insensitive Gigi has torrid affairs, including one with movie director Zach Nevsky. Often transported--whether metaphorically in bed or literally in private planes--Gigi finds time to concoct clever marketing ideas for Victoria Frost, the back-stabbing head of the ad agency she joins. Other characters play musical beds, too, including some who were married or lovers in earlier volumes. One woman is involved in a liaison with her stepfather, another in a sordid triangle and an attempted murder. Sprinkled with touch-of-class names like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Barbara Jordan, the novel moves merrily along to its predictable conclusion, while Gigi savors the life of the rich and famous. First serial to Cosmopolitan; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections; major ad/promo; author tour; TV and radio satellite author tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good!!, September 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lovers (Paperback)
Lovers is a "sequel" to Scruples 2. I like it a lot, but I didn't like it as much as Scruples 2. You read about Gigi and Vito, Sasha, Zach and Billy and Spider. Lovers is a more subdued version of Scruples 1 and 2. Some parts are boring, while others soar. The relationship between Sasha and Vito is a bit far-fetched as far as I'm concerned, but it's a good read overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, top-quality sequel to the Scruples series, April 21, 1997

This review is from: Lovers (Random House Large Print)
The book takes the reader right back into the lives of Billy Ikehorn and Spider. In this sequel, we are re-introduced to the lovely Gigi, and given a whirlwind tour of her many affairs, work-wise and other-wise. My only complaint to Ms. Krantz is that she seems to arbitrarily knock key characters off at the drop of a hat. However, that is her right as the author, and it does little to detract from the building excitements in the tale

4.0 out of 5 stars long live Scruples sequels!, August 8, 1999

While Lovers did not seem to hold my attention as well as Scruples I and II, I loved returning to these colorful characters.... couldn't buy Sasha and Vito. But I still loved it!
