Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The Sleepy Jackson are impossible to pin down. Just when you think beautifully-crafted pop songs are the sum of their musical aspirations, along comes a psychedelic burn-out or a country-ish ballad to counter songwriter Luke Steele's pop sensibility. That diversity has been the secret of The Sleepy Jackson's success so far. As one rave review put it - 'Luke Steele's lack of direction is his direction, gospel to his rare artistic perception'. Since emerging from Perth, Western Australia, The Sleepy Jackson have steadily built a fan-base in Australia & Europe on the strength of Steele's broad songwriting palette & his dynamic stage persona (think Jimi Hendrix meets John Lennon). Now The Sleepy Jackson present their first album, 'Lovers', & this much anticipated full-length debut merely confirms Steele as an artist of extraordinary depth & songwriting talent. The album includes two of Steele's

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down one of the best of 2003, November 11, 2003
By Jason (Maryland) - See all my reviews
I stumbled across this album here on amazon.com. There was a thing at the bottom that said Customers who bought this etc. so I clicked on The Sleepy Jackson. After hearing 30 seconds of Great Dancers I automatically knew this was a must buy even without hearing the rest of the song or the album. Turns out I was right. Lovers in my opinion is in my opinion this era's answer to Pet Sounds and Revolver. Sleepy Jackson have so much potential it's amazing to just think of what they could do next. This band has yet to really crossover and capture the U.S. listenrs but in time I think they will much like The Flaming Lips have with their excellent last two albums.

From the begining of Great Dancers to the end of Morning Rain it almost makes you feel like you just traveled to another world. The songs are full of wonderful harmonies and dreamlike music. You can tell that George Harrison, John Lennon and Brian Wilson have a strong influence over the songs on Lovers. This will be the next big thing here in the U.S. and if they aren't it's a real shame because this is a band that should be talked about in the same sentence with The Flaming Lips and Radiohead though in my opinion this album is far better than the albums those two have released in 2003. Definetly pick this one up and say you fell in love with them before they become the next big hyped act but it's not very often that a critically praised band along the lines of The Sleepy Jackson would be deserving of that praise. Lovers deserves all the praise it gets and then some. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius at Work, December 12, 2004
"Lovers" is to music what the "Mona Lisa" is to painting.
While not the perfect album of music by any stretch, "Lovers"is an original piece of work that will be listened to death by many music lovers around the world who appreciate an artist who is willing to take a chance on something a little bit out of left field but still fitting into the mainstream. The Sleepys are Luke Steele who changes his band members as frequently as he changes musical styles on this album.
Yes! "Lovers" at times seems somewhat overproduced and over orchestrated but strip it down to its bare essentials and you come up with beautifully crafted pop songs like "Good Dancers",rusty country ballads such as "Acid in My Heart" and the kick ass punk rocker "Vampire Racecourse"
With his first album "Lovers" neatly tucked away in his disco and the follow up due mid 2005 we can only wait with baited breath to see what the little voices in Luke Steeles frizzy head are humming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weird and Wonderful, October 18, 2005
By N. Burt "nikkles" (Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I picked this cd up not really know what it was, but thinking it looked really interesting. The vocals are great as is the feel of the album. Its very mellow without being boring. I don't really have much patience for slow tracks but this album was really interesting and different. A few of the songs are just amazing. I'd highly recomend it to anyone looking for something a little different, but still comfortable.
