5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down one of the best of 2003
I stumbled across this album here on amazon.com. There was a thing at the bottom that said Customers who bought this etc. so I clicked on The Sleepy Jackson. After hearing 30 seconds of Great Dancers I automatically knew this was a must buy even without hearing the rest of the song or the album. Turns out I was right. Lovers in my opinion is in my opinion this era's...

3.0 out of 5 stars A One Band Sampler
I recognize that The Sleepy Jackson throws up a lot of different styles, does them all pretty well, but the fact is pretty well just doesn't do it for me. And the underutilized female backups are just plain boring after awhile with their Motown meets the Four Seasons style, which is the one constant in most of the cuts here. A little more intensity and focus would be a...

Lovers in my opinion is in my opinion this era's answer to Pet Sounds and Revolver. Sleepy Jackson have so much potential it's amazing to just think of what they could do next. This band has yet to really crossover and capture the U.S. listenrs but in time I think they will much like The Flaming Lips have with their excellent last two albums.

From the begining of Great Dancers to the end of Morning Rain it almost makes you feel like you just traveled to another world. The songs are full of wonderful harmonies and dreamlike music. You can tell that George Harrison, John Lennon and Brian Wilson have a strong influence over the songs on Lovers. This will be the next big thing here in the U.S. and if they aren't it's a real shame because this is a band that should be talked about in the same sentence with The Flaming Lips and Radiohead though in my opinion this album is far better than the albums those two have released in 2003. Definetly pick this one up and say you fell in love with them before they become the next big hyped act but it's not very often that a critically praised band along the lines of The Sleepy Jackson would be deserving of that praise. Lovers deserves all the praise it gets and then some. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius at Work, December 11, 2004
This review is from: Lovers (Audio CD)
"Lovers" is to music what the "Mona Lisa" is to painting.
While not the perfect album of music by any stretch, "Lovers"is an original piece of work that will be listened to death by many music lovers around the world who appreciate an artist who is willing to take a chance on something a little bit out of left field but still fitting into the mainstream. The Sleepys are Luke Steele who changes his band members as frequently as he changes musical styles on this album.
Yes! "Lovers" at times seems somewhat overproduced and over orchestrated but strip it down to its bare essentials and you come up with beautifully crafted pop songs like "Good Dancers",rusty country ballads such as "Acid in My Heart" and the kick ass punk rocker "Vampire Racecourse"
With his first album "Lovers" neatly tucked away in his disco and the follow up due mid 2005 we can only wait with baited breath to see what the little voices in Luke Steeles frizzy head are humming.

5.0 out of 5 stars i need you, June 20, 2006
This review is from: Lovers (Audio CD)
the sleepy jackson are a band that hails from australia encompassing different styles of a lil bit of jazz, alot of folk, tasty twang, pure rock, catchy pop and even some new wave-esque sounds. however, the music doesnt allow itself to just fall into any ordinary genre, the simply good boy-girl melodies and lyrics bring the listener to another magical place all together. straight from the haunted dream world of band leader luke steeles, the 2003 album lovers is an original piece of work which may seem a lil out of left field for some but for those who enjoy taking an open-minded risk, will immediately win over. ++

4.0 out of 5 stars Weird and Wonderful, October 18, 2005
This review is from: Lovers (Audio CD)
I picked this cd up not really know what it was, but thinking it looked really interesting. The vocals are great as is the feel of the album. Its very mellow without being boring. I don't really have much patience for slow tracks but this album was really interesting and different. A few of the songs are just amazing. I'd highly recomend it to anyone looking for something a little different, but still comfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, December 13, 2004

This is a great album that has a laidback feel to it that you should listen to all the way through to really appreciate. It encompasses a bunch of different styles from folk, country, rock, pop, and just plain good songs. Its refreshing to hear an artist do what they want, even though you might think it resembles Beck at times. The Sleepy Jackson are one of the best bands to come around in awhile and hopefully they will continue to make outstanding music in the near future.

The Sleepy Jackson hail from the left-coast town of Perth, Australia. The band is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Luke Steele, who both displays and betrays a wide range of musical influences on this 13-track debut album. The George Harrison-inspired opening cut "Good Dancers" is dominated by producer Jonathan Burnside's soaring slide guitar and underpinned by complementary violin and viola parts. Next in line is the Velvet Underground-styled rave-up "Vampire Racecourse," which features atonal honky-tonk piano seemingly borrowed from David Bowie's "Aladdin Sane." Elsewhere on the album, Steele showcases a penchant for country-rock on tunes such as "Acid in My Heart" and "Miniskirt," which sounds like the companion piece to the Rolling Stone's classic "Dead Flowers." The deft musical arrangements throughout the album help ensure the proceedings don't become overly-derivative. While Luke Steele may wear his influences on his sleeve, it doesn't spoil the shirt.

5.0 out of 5 stars simply beautiful, November 9, 2004

I love music, and I adore this CD. I got lucky and accidentally stumbled on this CD; Rain Falls on Wind hooked me instantly. Its a mixture of new-wave pop with beautiful alt-country lullabies. This CD should have been big. I'd like to give a shout-out to MTV, Clear Channel, and everyone else responsible for destroying music.

What more can I say? This is a sensational album by a pretty weird looking band (Luke is pretty eerie - but a genius all the same). However there are so many moments of pure magic on this album that it blows me away every time I listen to it. It is one of thise albums that takes hold of you and forces you to listen intently. As the other reviews have mentioned, Lovers has a strong Beatles influence (a fantastic thing on its own) however doesn't sound cliched at all - on the contrary the mixing of styles eg country, new wave and classic 'late Beatles influenced'rock/pop makes this an experience I recommend to any lover of great rock/pop music. Grab this with The Shins 'Chutes Too Narrow' and you will have the best two releases of recent times.

This is a really fun CD. The Sleepy Jackson can be clever and odd, then be highly melodic and "oh my god, what a great melody!" A couple of my fave songs of the year are on this CD. Really recommend.

I don't know what it is about the land of Oz, but their music is better than ours. Period. First the untouchable Avalanches and now this work of greatness by the Sleepy Jackson has convinced me I'm living in the wrong country. "Good Dancers" is mesmerizing and incredible, but the rest of the album has no flaws and gets better everytime. Just when you thought it was simply stupendous, the last three songs arrive. Heaven in a discman. Wherever this music is playing, thats where I'm staying.
