Faye is getting better and better!,
By Kian (Cardiff, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lovers & Strangers (Audio CD)
The album rocks! Faye made an excellent attempt in marrying indie sensibility and mainstream appeal! The first track, the alternative Last Blossom features heavy digital distortion of Faye's vocal, and it's undoubtedly one of her best songs, ever! Faye's vocal performance just can't get better than this! The second track (The Moon Then) features the hallmark of Faye Wong. Lush vocal layers, sounding so definite and yet, effortless! The third track (Hypnosis) is another favourite of mine! The lyrics are utterly refreshing! This song, suprisingly reminds me of Natalie Imbruglia. The fourth track features Tong's (Faye's daughter) angelic laughters. A very good song indeed and definitely worth listening to! The fifth track, another rock based number, is another ingenius work of CY Kong and Adrian Chan. The lyrics are, again, excellent! Butterfly (Track 6) is a bittersweet number leaving a pleasnt aftertaste. The CD is defintely worth every penny of it, if not more. This is another brilliant work of Faye's. This girl has definitely got talent. No regrets at all getting this CD! I am so glad that Faye has not descended into a creative block after her divorce with her husband. Thumbs up for the album!

Incoherence Stands In the Way of Making It a Perfect10,

She is undisputably the Queen of Hong Kong pop,in terms of her style, her music and her popularity. However,I guess most of the non-Chinese population are still very unfamiliar with her(with the exception of those gameheads who dig FFVIII) She used to cover songs by the Cranberries and Tori Amos just by changing the lyrics of the song without altering the arrangement(just like the boy bands)once in a while. Later, she began to cover Cocteau Twins songs, 2 songs from 'Four-Candle Cafe', same thing, she just sings with exactly the same arrangement as the original. So many of you out there must be wondering, how the heck did her album get 4/5 from me? Well, she changed, a la Madonna, she reinvented herself and became the indie Queen of Hong Kong, still selling really well. Just listen to her rendition of Cocteau's 'Rilkean Heart',which is called 'Reminiscence', or if you prefer, buy the 'Restless' album(a la Cocteau) and tell me the difference. YES! She sounds gorgeous. Her vocal skills improved tremendously, as a result of emulating Elizabeth Fraser, which is really hard to imagine for most singers. Her last album 'Chang You' was great, there are a couple of really really commercial songs that seem out of place as usual, still, Track1'Lovelife', Track2'Face' and Track 7'Whimsical' are truly worthy of your attention, take note of the operatic kinda falsetto she showcased on'Face'. 'Lovers&Stangers'is her offering in 1999, which is still incoherent as ever, yet, 2 songs stands out as the best tracks in the album which is already worthy of your money(I know imports are expensive but she IS good!)Track1'Up to the Brambles' and Track5'Centuries of Loneliness', the former is a rock song with a fully-orchestrated arrangement, with the complement of special vocal distortion treatment making it one of a kind. The latter is simply the centrepiece of this album, fully-orchestrated just like track1, with a Middle East touch ,she really sounds like a siren here, this is a perfect example of how she can sound like a combination of Tori Amos, Dolores O'Riordan and Elizabeth Fraser, in a good way, of course! The rest of the album displays a kind of tranquility, some of you out there might find most of the songs here commercial, yes, it is true. This album, just like the rest of her albums with the exception of the perfect'Restless', is flawed, but with songs like 'Centuries of Loneliness' it is already worthy of your money....

FayeWong-A Whole New Genre!,

Faye has no doubt matured over the years! I'm unhappy about how Amazon describes her as the queen of mandarin pop. Faye's music is in reality a lot more alternative. Her music has been so fresh to so many people that critics find it hard to even label her songs as either "rock" or "techno". She seems to just mix everything in together to produce wonderful, yet different music. And of course, there's her voice. No one comes even close to her soft, high voice. Although, this isn't Faye's newest album (Her newest album is so unique I can't even describe it), it's still a good album. Track 1 is sorta a techno yet chinese opera feel-like song (if that's even possible), and track 10 is sorta dance-like, but accentuates her voice, and track 11 just blows your mind away, cuz its so unique. There's something for everyone in this CD. And truthfully only one song is "pop"-like, so if you like pop music, then this isn't the CD for you. Only critics and people who want to listen to something new should get this CD.

Simply refreshing.,

I've wondered for a while why Faye was so popular, and then I heard this. ^_^ Her voice is beautiful, dynamic, so light and flimsy and yet exploding with passion. Her songs are also very well written. Track one, last blossom is breathtakingly powerful. The arrangment is different, but very cool, very well done. I have to give my props to whoever wrote it, the lyrics are superb. Another one of my fav was one hundred year of solitude, which is one of the best pop songs I've heard in my life. This album is great, the songs are diverse and well written. All my life I seem to be surround by bubble gum pop, that, while okay with the ears, lacks meaning. But Faye's pop definitely carrys much more weight. She sings them with a nonchalant passion that grows on you very very quickly. One of Asia's greatest pop stars. Faye rules!

Faye Wong is Miss Thang,

Can we say yummy. I have had this CD for awhile and I just whipped out last week to remind myself why I like the album so much. As I am typing I am listening to one of her greatest hits albums. I was introduced to Faye in 1993 by my best friend. I am so hooked to her. Her voice is fantastic. I don't speak a word of chinese yet I know most of her lyrics. This CD is hot. #1 is mindblowing. I have to say that # 7 and #8 are my favorites though. I also love #10 and #2. I can't wait to pick up her latest CD. This album is banging. Take it from this no chinese speaking Jamaican.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lovers & Strangers (Audio CD)
I received the package slightly ahead of time and at a perfect time of day, so I didn't have to reschedule any of my normal activities that day (kudos to both the seller and shipping company). The package was a little beat up, but for taking an international trip, I expected as much. The CD itself was in better condition than I expected, which got even more bonus points from me.
Faye Wong has been a favorite of mine for years and I felt thrown back into my younger years, where I first heard her beautiful music. I believe that my purchase was long overdue to be honest.

Completely enjoyable from the first song to the last,

It is rare these days to purchase a CD that has ten good songs let alone ten great ones. This has to be faye's best and most emotionally charged release ever. Don't miss this one.
