Book Description

July 31, 2008
Lord Dewar visits St. Alton's Abbey, his ancestral estates, infrequently, preferring the cultural atmosphere of London, for the handsome young landowner is a great devotee of the arts—music, painting and especially the theater. It has been more than two years, then, since Holly McCormack has laid eyes on his lordship. Not that she minds, for Holly is eminently practical, as a poor relation making a home with better-off relatives must necessarily be. If she gives any thought to Dewar at all, it is only to condemn him in her mind for neglecting the duties incumbent on the lord of the Abbey. Things change however, when Dewar comes home on a rare visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars a nod to Jane Austen, September 24, 2009

This review is from: Lovers' Vows (Hardcover)
This book, probably this author, is a hidden gem. It's witty, and much closer to the writing of Jane Austen herself than most Regencies. The title is the title of the play put on in Austen's Mansfield Park, but in this book the play being presented is Romeo and Juliet. Holly, the protagonist, is a poor relation, and conveniently plain. Her cousin, an heiress, is a young-looking and lovely 17, and she will play Juliet, with Holly to chaperone her amongst aesthete Lord Dewar and his fun-loving bachelor friends. Every character is drawn with wit, and the plot more complex than you expect from a slim Regency. This book is fun!
