Love's Enduring Promise,
By
This review is from: Love's Enduring Promise (Love Comes Softly Series #2) (Paperback)
Love Comes Softly, the first book in the series, left us with Marty finally realizing how much Clark means to her. This book picks up a few months later with Marty secure in her role as Clark's "better half", and expecting their first child. The book covers about 13 years in under 300 pages. Marty finds the courage to reach out a helping hand to her neighbors in need, even as her responsibilities at home increase with each new addition to their family. It was refreshing to see the love and care that thrived in a community of believers. The Larson girls - Nandry and Clae - come to live with the Davises when their mother dies. Tommy Grahm comes to Marty for advise about an Indian girl he is pretty sure his parents would not approve of. Marty makes sure she is there when Wanda Marshal's baby arrives. A teacher, and later a preacher, come to the town. Yeah, there are a lot of sub plots, and really no main plot. This is a bed time story book; something to read a little of every night, and glean something good to think about from. I like this book pretty well, but there are some things I find rather annoying. For example, Ms Oke has an odd tendancy to name girls masculine names, and boys feminine names. I mean, Clae is a girl, and Clare is a boy, when it would sound more naturual the other way around. Kinda funny. Also, there were so few conversations between the main charactors. Only two or three heart-to-hearts between Clark and Marty, and only ONE recorded conersation between Nandry and Clae! There really ought to have been two books written to cover so many years, but, for what it is, it's really good. Watch the movie, too. It does a much better job with Missie and Willie's romance.

I had read the first part of this book "Love Comes Softly" and I thought it was great so I had to read the next part. I also thought the second part was also great.. How they cotinued the book from when Missy was young to the day she got married. as soon as I get the chance I am going to read the rest of the book. Once you start reading these books it is very hard to put them down.. I would recomend these book to anyone who wants to read a great book..

This is an excelent companion to "Love Comes Softly". It is the second in the series and an excellent read. I found it hard to put down. Janette Oke is a wonderful writer and can keep you so involved with the story that you hate for it to end.

This book ties 1 and 3 together. Too, many things were happening and there were too many characters to remember. It didn't focus on "the family". It introduced Willie at the very end. But, it was OK, if you are reading the series, you will need to read this book. Not one of my favorites in the series, but good reading. And, if you can, see the film. Although it does not follow the book , you will fall in love with Missie and Willie.

Book 2 in Love Comes Softly Series,

I ordered Love's Enduring Promise even as I was half way through with Love Come's Softly because I knew that it would pick up where the first book was ending and I couldn't stop reading. This second book continues with Marty and Clark's story but ends with their daughter Missy's story.
Marty promises a dying friend that she would ensure her two daughters Nandry and Clae attend the new school after she's gone. The father of these girls is against it but God does work in mysterious ways and in the end, the girls end up with Marty and Clark. I'm not giving anything away here as a lot of the book revolves around answered prayer even if it's not answered in quite the way they wanted. This second book in the series focuses on the two girls mentioned and the new additions to Marty and Clark's increasing family as well as marriages and deaths in this small town. Most of the children of the neighbors have their own chapter, which is good as I like to know that they are growing up and who they are paired up with. In the end, it's about Missy and the man in her life. I just started reading book 3 Love's Long Journey and it begins with Missy's story....

I love to re read all of my favorite books from childhood and this is the first series that I had ever read. Of course, any book that my parents got me, I would devour, but I love this whole series! Including the Prairie Legacy series!

Purchase went very well. A++++++++ Books came in perfect condition. I would recomend this seller.
This book is a great book for any age, I started my young teenage grand daughters off reading the "Love comes softley" series, but the are great for any age. My mother read them late in life when she was too weak to be able to do other activities. I never saw my Mother read books except for Janette Oke's books, and she could not put any of them down till she was finished with them and wanted to start a new one. THanks for the great job!

I almost feel guilty giving "Love's Enduring Promise" only a 4-star rating; however, its brevity in plot and character development, left me a little unsatisfied. It was not until the end that my tears began to flow and emotionalism had me check and remind myself, "It's only a book." I started out to read only the first 2 books in the "Love Comes Softly" series, after having somehow stumbled onto the first book. Now, I'm more inclined to go further...How much further? Well, that depends. If #3 is about Missy and Willie, I'm hooked! I can say that as the mother of a daughter (an only daughter), who just happens to live only 18 miles away, I cannot fathom losing her to a greater unreachable distance. I think my attachment here developed in the first book, as Marty grew to love Missy and Clark. (I loved Book 1!) I would have appreciated more intimacy or development, as in Book one, into the relationships in this book. But they seemed to only fly by, like ships in the night. Truthfully, I can honestly say I'm looking forward to more of Ms.Oke's work. And this makes her a serious contender in my book, since I'm a Kindle owner and the series, while dated, does not come in groups! A virtual "newcomer" to JO's work.

I enjoyed this book very much. I read it last when I was a teenager (over 20 years ago) and enjoyed it just as much now for different reasons. I enjoyed seeing the love Clark and Marty had with each other, and the love they had for the other's child. I loved watching their family grow through the love this couple has for each other (even the addition of the two 'adopted' children showed Clark's love for Marty, because he made it happen for her...)
My only regret is that about 15 years or so was covered in this one book. I would have loved to see this book split into about 4 so we could get a bigger look into the Davis' lives...Clark and Marty's love for each other, more detail on the children and their aging, etc... Janette Oke did a fabulous job! I am now deep into Book three and enjoying it very much. |
