Book Description

January 1, 1983
ALL THAT GLITTERS When Damien Straith, captain of the Sally, first met Amethyst, named for the rare color of her bewitching eyes, she was no more than a thin child with a tongue sharper than the icy winter wind cutting through Charleston Harbor. Upon their chance meeting eight years later, Damien could see she was a child no more, but a raven-curled, intoxicating woman, fiery-tempered and ripe for love. Amethyst tried not to be affected by Damiens piercing gray gaze and muscular body, but her passion burned fiercely. Delirious with longing, yet afraid of the consequences, Amethyst hated the power Damien held over her body and let the mysterious captain turn pirate and plunder her heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful romance, September 5, 2000

I have been reading romance books for over 20 years and I have to say that this book is one of the best. Elaine Barbieri has the ability to provide conflict between the two main characters, Amethyst and Damien, resulting in a spellbinding, page turning plot. Damien's character is chauvanistic, but we can forgive him because he is seeping with male vitality. As the characters move from Philidelphia to Jamacia, we experience all the details from climate to clothing and we feel we are there too. If you like historical romance, this book won't disappoint you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pass this one up..., August 31, 2011
I have been an avid romance reader for about five years now and came across this one in my mom's stash. I have to say it is the worst book I have ever read. I am just about half way through and have decided to not go any further (this has never happened to me before). The story starts with a nine year old girl and early thirties man and he has a fondness for her and her mother in the beginning. Then again when she is 13 and he is mid thirties, they meet once more. Barbieri writes about how beautiful he thinks she is going to be. Finally 3 years later when she is 16 and he is late 30s he goes in for the kill. The man cuts her off from the other man in her life for no other reason than because she "belongs to him." If that wasn't bad enough, he forces this 16 year old child to have sex with him. It's not romantic at all, it's a rather disturbing tale of pedophilia and rape.

I'm stopping at the point in the book where he has now abducted the 16 year old child from her home in order to force her to come live with him as his mistress until he tires of her. The whole story is just sick and I can't go any further. I feel bad after reading what I have. I hope others don't make the same mistake. Rape is not romantic or sexy and neither is pedophilia.
