Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Tedious narrative and a tired plot burden this mundane tale that Lanigan (Tender Malice) considers to be a way to help emotionally battered women "navigate their way back to emotional, spiritual and psychological freedom." When her husband commits suicide after mishandling funds and driving the family business to financial ruin, trophy-wife Roya Pulaski must step into the breach and fight to save what's left of her children's livelihood. Of course, Roya hasn't a clue how to run the company, which means she must rely on marketing genius Nick Petros to pull her through. Unfortunately, Lanigan buries Roya beneath a plethora of characters, all of whom have problems as great as hers and have overcome them with the same blithe ease. Fans expecting the usual adventure, charm and imaginativeness of Lanigan's previous works will be disappointed with this offering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating - Couldn't put it down!, March 13, 1999

This review is from: In Love's Shadow (Mass Market Paperback)
My first novel by Catherine Lanigan, but certainly not my last. This book was well written, easy reading and didn't bog you down with too many characters at the very beginning of the book. It was good, clean reading and wasn't chocked full of explicit sex scenes and profanity. I picked up this book at every opportunity I had to find out the "rest of the story." If you like romance and drama - this is the book for you. Finding other books by this author is at the top of my "to do" list and I can't wait to get started on another one. I loved the bio in the back of the book where her college professor told her she would never earn a living as a writer. Ten best selling books later and two movies to her credit isn't too shabby. I am glad she didn't let her professor's stupidity discourage her from fulfilling her dream. Way to go

5.0 out of 5 stars Mainstream fiction at its' most enjoyable, September 9, 1998

This review is from: In Love's Shadow (Mass Market Paperback)
In a wealthy suburb of Chicago, ostensibly affluent Bud Pulaski sees no other way out of his current predicament except suicide, which he commits. Thirty-eight year- old Roya, his grieving spouse of twenty years is further shocked when Kitt Cabrizzi, Bud's mistress for almost four decades, announces who she is at the funeral. Her parents offer Roya no help as they can't deal with the suicide. Roya's life spins even further out of control when she sees how in debt the family truly is.

As Roya begins to salvage her life and that of her teenage children, she realizes that she trusts no males after learning the devastating secrets hidden by her allegedly beloved husband before he took his life. As she straightens out her own life and supports her children during their time of need, Roya depends on no one else. However, that does not stop her from falling in love with Nick Petros and also having to contend with a vengeful Kitt, who blames everyone but herself for all she lost with the death of her beloved Bud.

Catherine Lanigan scribes a brilliant relationship drama that has a unique twist in the central story line that links everyone to the man who has killed himself. Thus, the story line hinges on how various females behave while coping with a sudden and violent death, especially since they are unable to confront him with the repercussions to his choices, including the suicide. IN LOVE'S SHADOW is a great contemporary women's fiction novel that is sure to garner awards for the remarkable Ms. Lanigan who vividly demonstrates how women can, through adversity, empower themselves.
