This review is from: Love's Wine (Paperback)
The Civil War is over and the carpetbaggers swarm the south. Holly Maxwell and her mother Claudia don't have many options with the family plantation burned and the taxes due. Claudia's a bit of a flibbertigibbet who is more interested in catching a new man, Yankee or not. Holly, on the other hand, loathes all Yankees with a passion and is determined to make it on her own on the piece of land in the bayou left her by her grandfather. Yep, she'll plant and fish and sell them to make a profit. All. By. Herself. Holly dresses like a man and swears like a soldier and charms all the men, including Yankee soldier Scott Colter. The story (such as it is) continues with verbal and sexual sparring between Scott and Holly, a mystery surrounding a missing gold shipment, and some evil evil baddies who try to frighten Holly off of her property and...

Trust me, you don't want to know more. This was very dire, and one best qualified as a wall-paper romance. Still not sure? Here's a few choice quotes that should convince you to pass:

"Oh, my, Colonel," she cooed. "You aren't going to shoot a woman just because she wants your body are you?"

"When she had taken him to glory, he reached down and lifted her to her feet. He dropped her on the bed and, without bothering to undress her, lifted her skirts and her underthings and plunged in."

""He entered her, a sword of victory, devouring her hunger with his own till they found, together, the ultimate glory..."

"Within the dizzying throes, the burning hunger, she thrilled to feel the liquid of his pulsing desire against her flesh - evidence that he wanted her intensely."

*rolls eyes*

There's plenty more like that, but you'll have to read it for yourself to find them. Some of my friends at Goodreads have been reading Hagen's Coltrane series with great success, and as I'm always on the hunt for civil war romances I was tickled to pick this up on the cheap at a Friends of Library sale. Wish I'd just left it on the shelf for someone else to pick.
