Tried to like it but just barely OK,

This book got glowing reviews from Wellen's famous friends but I'd advise you not to waste your time with this novel. The premise is great but the characters were flat and didn't make me want to really care about them and their circumstances. I was more often depressed by the situation in the pharmacy (I don't want to give away the "surprise" twist) and the wedding troubles than laughing at the "humorous" moments -- they were not that funny as presented. Like Andy, the narrator, I am back to living in the same small town where I grew up. I recognized elements of my community and neighbors in the book ... but for me, the story relates more of a tired sadness than a funny commentary on today's challenges for young and old.

I really wanted to like this book! There were a few characters that if they would have been developed further could have been really great! But I felt as if I had heard the whole story before....not a bad book, read easily, and there were a few good parts to it...

Enjoyed spending time w/ the good folks of Crockett, CA,

On a friend's recommendation, I bought "Lovesick" to read on a business trip. The book is a find, especially considering this is Wellen's first novel. The characters and locations have rich depth, the dialogue is witty, and whenever you expect the story to fall into traditional conventions, Wellen cleverly takes the plot in unexpected directions. I very much enjoyed the book, and look forward to future works by this promising author.

I hate to say it, but this book is really boring. I bought this a while back, made it a couple of chapters in, and quit. Recently, going through books I haven't finished on my Kindle (there aren't that many because usually I try and finish books that I start), I decided to give this one another try, and now I find myself quitting again. I just can't become even remotely interested in this story. I find all of the characters to be people that I would never want to talk to in real life, so maybe that explains it. Especially Andy. How annoying can a character be? Giving up for good this time.

This book was only OK, truthfully Andy is kind of a dolt. I feel bad for his girlfriend - he has potential but seems to be quite happy to do nothing important with his life. Instead of being intensely amusing the characters, town, and situation were rather depressing. I still read the entire book so that says something.

I absolutely loved this book. Alex Wellen writes the lead character with heartwarming humor, and the story is one of growing, loving and living. Anyone who has ever been in love or felt unsure if themselves or felt a little lost in life will totally identify with this book. It reminded me of being 29 and having that eureka (euraka! read the book) moment of knowing where I wanted my career path to take me and of meeting the man of my dreams and getting engaged! This book is will take you on a whirlwind of crazy senior citizens with dogs, canes and meds. You will laugh out loud and love it. :-)

If you ever pursued the love of your life, had to face evaluation by his or her overly-protective parents, created a list of desired wedding presents, or had a moneymaking idea that you thought would set you up for life--then this is the book you want to read. Or, if you want instructions on how to maneuver through a relationship with helpful charts, graphs and a remarkable point system, it's also in here. Or, if you just want to laugh. Fact is, if you want to extend that summer feeling, grab Wellen's book. The characters will stay with you and there are dozens of great lines you can appropriate as your own. Alex has created an American town you are likely to want to visit again and again. And it's a paperback--so there's no heavy-lifting.

Wellen totally nails this fictional story. It's a fun read with an edge of your seat narrative. Yes, it's a "beach book", but in no way does that mean the story doesn't deliver. There's plenty of drama. The characters are all relatable in different ways and interesting enough to feel invested in the outcome of the story. I found myself anxious to turn the page find out where the story goes next. I found myself casting the movie as I read the book.
His first book, Barman (autobiographical), is also a great read and similar in tone. Now that I discovered this promising young author I can't wait to see what he does next. Hope he's hard at work on his next novel.

Love, crime and car chases - what more do you need in a novel? This was a very enjoyable book and had nice suspense that really kept me wondering what was next!
