Who Taught Who?,
By RNC213 (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Loveslapped (Audio CD)
I had casually heard that "Jay-J" was instrumental in guiding the talent that is "Miguel Migs", and while I can not substantiate this knowledge even in full recogntion of his earlier joint release with Mr. Migs, his latest, "Loveslapped III", proves to be the "sleeper of the year"; completely enunciating that sound we associated with the Naked Music label even though not visibly tied. It is a gorgeous blending of the "Blue Note" vibe in "House", with that classic San Francisco "Rag Era" piano so prominient in the early days of "Garage". Of note, there is also a "Pop" and "Jazz" genre which makes it all so seemingly palatable to the very diverse audiences which explore dance music these days. A great find, and I must recommend it for every sophisticated social event that occurs before, during or after your Disco night out on the town.

Jay-J at his best,

What can be said about the man that brings his soulful deep touch to everything he does? While certainly not forging new territory in the the world of house, Jay-J's Loveslapped certainly brings it back to where it all begins for many of us househeads and truly reminds us why we dig his deep soulful grooves. Included are not only his tracks but many of his favorites, all mixed together with great love and passion. A wonderful addition to anyone's collection.

Adjectives abound to describe the music on this CD: groovy lounge, funky jazz, uptempo soul - you get the point. The bottom line is the CD contains 72 minutes of quality songs in a genre (house/lounge/nuJazz) that produces a lot of mediocre music. I've found this single CD to be much more playable than many of the 2 CD collections in the bargrooves and Afterdark series. It has a nice variety of tracks without going to far in any one direction - from the smooth vocals on Give A Little and Surprise Me to the jazzy Sugar Baby Darlin and Feel the Music. A keeper and repeater.

Despite what I have heard.....this CD is nice.I have been looking for the Grant Nelson's, "Feel the Music" for awhile now...needless to say I'm warm and tingly inside.(I moved from the south and its hard to find or hear certain types of music, but I relocated to NYC.... Dont get me wrong..I have some of the songs already on other CDs,BUT he (Jay-J)puts it together with style and taste. Similiar to seeing someone with the same outfit on as you ....but it seems as though you carry it better.I love Miguel Migs....but 24th Street cant touch this one!

A wonderful deep house set complied by Jay J. In particular, I love "KEEP HOPING" by BEARD FT AMMA. If you like also check out the other great tracks offered by Inspirit Music label.**** and two thumbs up!

A very good dance album that's a little cheesy in spots - dance fans will still love it - 4.5 stars,
This review is from: Loveslapped (Audio CD)
Though I think Miguel Migs' "24th. Street Sounds" is a much better album (ok, that comparison's a little unfair, I know), Jay-J's "Loveslapped" is still a very good dance album. The production is pretty well done, but it's a tad hard to see many parties or clubs playing this compared to other albums (it's not bad, but there are better albums). The album starts off really well, but towards the end it fades out just a tad - overall it's great, though. I'd say the worst part about the album is when the female vocalist kicks in (see "I Can't Wait" for an example). She's not bad, but she's a little annoying and I think a guilty pleasure. It definitely gets repetitive after a while, but if all you're looking for is background music for a party than this is still a great CD. Overall I think it's not a classic, but dance music fans will still love it. Highly recommended!Highlights include: the entire album! |
