Editorial Reviews

2009 debut release from Austrian sensation Anja Plaschg AKA Soap & Skin. Few musical discoveries in recent years have been as staggering as that of Soap & Skin. The sheer force this eighteen year old artist injects into her compositions almost beggars belief, her songs consuming every last drop of her with no regard for grace. Then again, the 13 deeply melancholic compositions of piano are so drenched in beauty and gracefulness, one could crumble on hearing them. Lovetune For Vacuum is an unwavering line of drama, inner conflict and melancholy, remarkably mature on the one hand, yet feeding on unbridled youthful exuberance on the other. The album's songs were recorded mostly just by Plaschg herself, who rather resembles a tragically rebellious heroine flung into the present like a shivering ghost of the Victorian Bront‰ sisters, far too worldly-wise for such a young slip of a girl. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting piano and singing over playfull idm backgound, February 18, 2010

Amazing album. Its oddly hard to find music of this style that manages to hold back the electronics enough to allow the more oranic parts to take center stage. The balancing here is spot on. Wish there was more available music from her now. The album fits nicely next to bjork, sigur ros, aphex twin (drukqs), mira calix and even autechre. My favorite new artiest in recent memory. For aesthetic reaons the cd is one of those odd black coated ones they used to use for psone games. Looks amazing but isn't universally compatible.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album to be listened to as a whole, until acquainted with., December 26, 2011

This album is a must. It is one of a few albums that I only listen to all the way through. The way the songs play with one another create such beautiful contrast. The album is perfectly paced. The individual songs are beautiful on their own, too, make no mistake, but to really catch the beauty, one should at least get acquainted with the album as a whole before delving into the individual works of art. Each one has made me cry at one time or another. Or, made me shiver in ecstasy. Really, one of the best albums I've ever heard.

If you're wondering what's going on with the young musically in Austria's non-classical world, check this out. Very challenging to your sound system, speakers or headphones: the better they are, the better this will sound. A tendency toward the melancholy.
