Book Description

August 26, 2003
There are several books about the lives of drug addicts. Stories told of how and why a person uses drugs, the effects of the drug, and how it destroyed their lives to the point where they lost everything, including their families. However, all stories don't have tragic endings. Many people have been able to reach their lowest point and, by God's grace, were able to start over and live totally delivered lives.

Yet there is another side to the story. What about the family members who have never experienced drugs and can't understand the strong hold that is tearing their loved one apart? So many lives are being affected by drug abuse. It isn't just the addict who is affected by using the drug, but also the family members who love that person despite the addiction.

For some, this book will shed light on the behavior of a drug addict, the effects of drugs on the person who is using them, and the effects drug dependency has on family life. For others, it will be an all-too-familiar recollection of their own experiences. The reality of this issue is painful and there is no way to tip toe around the truth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and educational, September 22, 2003

Sasha's owner (Oakland, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This booked is written for the Christian reader and although I do not hold any strong religious beliefs other than following the golden rule and making sure my bed is made every day, I did find this book captivating. There are enough bible quotes and biblical associations to keep the devout reader happy and enough intelligent writing and autobiographical details to keep the layperson interested. Following the author though her struggle with addiction in her marriage is as heart wrenching as it compelling. By detailing her most inner thoughts and experiences, the author takes us on a harrowing journey through a marriage torn by drug addiction, mental and physical abuse and deceit. It is a long and painful contest that she and many others have been forced to endure. Her eventual triumph over these issues is a testament both to the author's strength and her devotion to her values. The author's success, words of advice and hope are an inspiration to everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, October 23, 2003

This review is from: Loving The Addict, Hating The Addiction: For Christian families coping with drug addiction (Hardcover)
This Christian author shared with her readers some very personal experiences. While reading this book, I was reminded that we don't always know how much we may have in common with others. In this book you will understand how easy it is to become a co-dependent of a loved one who is addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. This book chronicles the pain and suffering, and the burdens that the addicted place on their loved ones. This book reveals the highs and lows, the love and hate, and the hopes and fears experienced in a co-dependent relationship.

Many families experience co-dependency and this book tells us we are not alone. Ms. Sims reveals that no matter how saved you are, no matter how much you pray for intervention on behalf of family who struggle with drug addition, sooner or later you will have to realize that the one whose afflicted has to want to be delivered and freed from that addiction. One of the greatest messages in the book is that sometimes the person who needs the healing most will get it last. The book covers a lot of ground, and offers a lot of encouragement for the co-dependent family. I recommend this book to those who are addicted too; so that they can understand the pain and heartache their loved ones feel watching them destroy their lives.

This book is a very good read, and the author even shares some of her favorite Bible scriptures and intercessory prayers with her audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping and passionate book, January 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Loving The Addict, Hating The Addiction: For Christian families coping with drug addiction (Hardcover)
Ms. Sims writes in a deeply personal way allowing the reader not only to connect with her story, but also with one's own emotions. This is a book about survival, hope, and forgiveness. The topic is difficult, and the author is not sentimental. There are moments in the narrative when it is so shocking the depth of Ms. Sims honesty and courage shine through in an ultimately pleasurable way for her readers. This is a book to inspire anyone working though difficult family issues around drugs and co-dependency. I highly recommend this book. It will leave you feeling renewed and empowered.
