3.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, April 30, 2001
THE WAY WE WED is a clear demonstration of "don't judge the book by the cover." The impression created by the cover is a pubescent boy. But the description of the book hooked me anyway, and led me to buy the book anyway. Again, don't judge the book by its cover, including the back cover, because when I finished the book I kept wondering if the editor that wrote the blurb read the same book I did. Perhaps because the Year of Loving Dangerously plot that binds the series does not advance. This is an entirely character driven romance.

Jeff Kirby is at the SPEAR owned and operated Condor Mountain Resort and Spa in California when he receives word that his wife and SPEAR agent, Tish Buckner, is in serious condition in a New York hospital. Tish was nearly fatally injured in a bomb blast as tried to assist in the capture the agency's arch-nemesis, Simon. As Jeff makes his way to the airport and across the country, to sit at his beloved wife's bedside, as she lays comatose, the novel progresses in a series of flashbacks over the previous year.

After a traumatic experience (as detailed in Mission: Irresistible), Jeff goes to Red Rock Ranch in Arizona, another SPEAR owned facility, to recuperate. The twenty-four year old is working to complete his medical residency, planning to then join SPEAR as a full-time medevac specialist. At Red Rock Ranch, Jeff meets Tish and falls totally in love. Despite Tish's reticence, Jeff brings the love-shy Tish to his way of thinking and feeling. Jeff's passion and commitment to Tish make the story delightful, demonstrating a youth vigor and faith.

As the novel progresses, the reader's privy to Jeff's reflection of their relationship, how they ended up secretly married, and what went wrong between the two of them. The otherwise great story, however, is marred by the conclusion. The very difficulties that split Jeff and Tish through the year have not been resolved, and I'm terribly disappointed with Tish's career decision (last sentence of the book). This powerful, strong woman seems terribly weakened by her choices. Further, for readers troubled by age differences, this issue doesn't feel fully explored. I share a considerable age difference in my own relationship, and while these obstacles are not insurmountable, they are considerable, especially if the woman as the older character and is approaching forty. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Romance , October 15, 2007
By mahikahn (Columbus, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
First: ignore the picture on the front and back of the book. Jeff is 24 and in the pictures doesn't even look old enough to shave and is wearing a cowboy hat several sizes too big.

While part of the SPEAR series this book is mostly a love story.

I don't normally like books from only one person's point of view, but it was perfect in this one.

When his wife, a fellow SPEAR agent, is injured in a bomb blast young doctor, Jeff, rushes to her side. As Tish lies in a coma Jeff talks to her about how they met, fell in love and secretly married which is interwoven with flashbacks. Afraid Jeff didn't really love her and will hurt her, as a previous man did, and concerned about the 12 year age difference, Tish has tried to distance herself from Jeff but her love for him kept bringing her back.

I didn't think the age difference and the difficulties involved were explored enough. But the main reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was the very end. I thought the decision she made was completely out of character and I lost some respect for her.

But it's definitely well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars #10 ? IN THE SPEAR SAGA?, September 13, 2002

Number 10 alright! Just not much in the action of the SPEAR saga.
We meet again, Jeff's adopted father, East Kirby and learn that East and Ally have a little daughter.

I rated it a 4 star as the story was very well dramatized but I hate to say it but I couldn't wait to get done with it.

I guess I expected more of Jeff Kirby, who at 24 is coming into his prime and with his background and training from East he would be a bit more aggressive.

Tish Buckner, at 36, was a little too career oriented at first and wanted to put off having children for a few years. Yikes! what was she thinking with? She doesn't have that much time.

Story was alright but ----- It was an OH well, book! Cover does a lot to co-incide with the story - He looks about 24 -- Not my most favorite book.

Well, onto the next in the SPEAR saga #11 - CINDERELLA'S SECRET AGENT by Ingrid Weaver and the SPEAR agent, Del Rogers - here's hoping.
