Book Description

Eliza left her life of prostitution to become something she could never be back in Omaha: a lady. As soon as she arrives in South Dakota, she runs into John Evans, the town mute, who immediately falls in love with her and wants to marry her. She fights off his proposals, even as her attraction for him grows stronger. But can she afford to let him know her past? Will he love her anyway?

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful love story! July 10, 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a very beautiful love story. Very sweet and touching. I thought it was well-written. No hardcore violence, dilemmas or tragedies, just the way I like it. The story is free on the author's website, but I love it so much that I'm ordering the paperback version to permanently keep on my bookshelf - yeah, that's how much I love it, LOL...

Heroine is a former prostitute who lives her hometown wanting to start over in another place. She meets the hero, who is mute & who mistakes her for his mail-order bride. Heroine finds out her would-be employer passed away before she arrived & hero offers her a job. Heroine is older by 2 yrs and hero is a virgin who's never even kissed any girl.

I agree with the former poster, I've read a couple of this author's stories and so far, I've loved them all.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a shame... June 29, 2011
By Rhonda
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm so glad I didn't pay for this book. I wanted to like it before I ever read it. The premise, a former prostitute trying to be a lady falls in love with a mute man, sounded so intriguing. The potential! What a great idea!

The execution of the story, however, left much to be desired. The repetition of certain facts in the first handful of pages, the same facts over and over and over, was annoying--enough already, I got it after the fourth time! It wasn't as bad further into the novel, but the author continued to hammer home certain points again and again, and it continued to annoy. There were numerous misspellings, although I felt they might have been the result of auto-correct, where a word was misspelled and the word processing program auto-corrected it to a "best guess" that was a real word but not the correct word. It speaks to poor editing (as does the repetition issue). The one that stayed with me awhile due to the context of the sentence was "peaked" when it should have been "peeked". There were many very obvious grammatical errors and contradictions that I feel would likely have been caught had this novel been better edited.

I could have easily lived with all that because, as I said, I really wanted to like this book. What I couldn't live with, ultimately, was that on page one, right at the very top, I was told this story takes place in 1883, and yet the author gave me whiplash switching from the 19th century to the late 20th century, the 21st century and back again! I felt as if I were in some crazy time warp! Oh, not that this is a sci-fi novel. It's not meant to be, anyway. However Eliza and the other characters often spoke, had clothing details or did things that were not of the late 19th century. There were even a few times I felt I'd been briefly dragged to a small town in the late 18th century! It seemed as if the author forgot, often, that the setting was 1883.

Still, I really really really wanted to like this book, so I kept reading even as my disappointment grew. A little more than halfway in, the plot seemed to stall and the story began to go around and around in boring circles for awhile. I got the impression the author had a total word count to meet and decided to add in a bit of nothing to fill some space. Then things began happening that were obviously contrived to try to add some drama to the novel and sympathy for Eliza. I had plenty of sympathy with Eliza's plight before she moved into the boarding house and started working for the overly nasty woman (again, repetitious to make sure the reader understood the woman was truly awful). By this point, my frustration with this novel boiled over, and I skipped through large chunks of it. I saw where the nasty lady came back into the storyline, but by that time I didn't care. Although I knew the main characters would eventually marry from the very start, by the time they did, I didn't care. It seemed anti-climatic anyway, but that could be because I was skipping pages by then.

Unfortunately, this is the first piece I've read by this author, and it will be the last. I love historical novels, properly done, and I thought I'd found a new author in my favorite genre. Sadly, no.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story but for a few pet peeves April 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book and found the story very sweet. The characters are well drawn and I could empathize with them. I couldn't, however, give it more than three stars because as this was supposed to be historical fiction in set in the late 19th century I found the use of certain items and phrases that didn't come into use until the 20th century very bothersome. Zippers didn't come into common use for men's pants and trousers until the 1930's and the term rip-off (used at least five times by the characters in the book) didn't come into use until the 1960's. I had read another of this author's books and found the same phrase there as well. I love historical fiction and it always takes me out of the story when things like this occur. I just wish the author had done a little more research. It took me all of five minutes on Google to do so.

This was a great read, having been drawn in from page one! Strength of the people on the book is incredible! Couldn't put it down! Would have like a bit more in the epilogue.

I read a different title by this author and it was sweet and clean, no bedroom scenes, so I thought this would be along those lines. Not the case. Read more
