Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Most Christians can easily understand God as Father and have no difficulty in conjuring a vivid mental image of Jesus Christ as God's Son. But few are able to summarily and succinctly describe the Holy Spirit, including its position within the Trinity or its role as helper. Miller, Beeson Divinity School professor and author of Singer Trilogy and The Unchained Soul, irons out what he believes are confused misconceptions surrounding the Holy Spirit. (Strangely, one of those misconceptions is about the gender of the Holy Spirit; although Miller acknowledges evidence that the Bible uses a feminine noun for the Spirit, he insists that the Holy Spirit is a "he," co-eternal and co-equal to God and Christ.) Noting the varied biblical symbols of the Holy Spirit, which include wind, fire and oil, Miller does an exemplary job combining storytelling with biblical exposition as he gently instructs readers to carefully study each mode. The fire in Acts 2, for instance, demonstrates "incendiary joy" as the Holy Spirit fell upon the early Christians and produced a passion unlike anything ever experienced. Miller claims that the Holy Spirit's work is to produce a hunger for God, an excitement that purifies the heart and ushers in energy to achieve God's will on earth. Miller exceeds expectations with this lovely and timely work, which is among the best he has written and deserves a permanent place in both professional and personal libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE best teaching on the Holy Spirit I have ever experienced, December 4, 2009
By

I have never actually written an author before to thank him for his work, but I did email Calvin Miller when I finished Loving God Up Close to express my almost indescribable gratitude for this book. This has become a book I recommend to EVERYONE.

I have been walking with Jesus for about 20 years now and have known the Holy Spirit and didn't feel 'in the dark' about Him. When I picked up the book I was in a place where I just felt 'off' and disconnected in general. Dr/Mr? Miller really wrote an inspired work!

He makes the Holy Spirit knowable and not just that, as you discover more about Him and are reminded about who He really is you can't help but WANT to know Him more and more and more. You realize how beautiful and wonderful and deeply intimate the Holy Spirit is and how He is ALWAYS at work. All I can say is that this book added incredible depth and intimacy to my relationship with Him and even now just thinking about it I want to read it again. I feel that way every year. It deeply warms the soul and helps you walk with the power, purpose and confidence that really just radiates throughout yourself, and in extension, your life. I don't know that I can recommend this book highly enough.

Also, it is an easy read. Very understandable for anyone whether you are exploring God and the Holy Spirit, have known the Holy Spirit for a while, or you want to dig deeper. Excellent for any reader.

This review is from: Loving God Up Close (Hardcover)
Calvin Miller's book "Loving God Up Close" is a beautifully-written meditation on the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. As Eugene Peterson describes it, "Miller invites us into a confident conversation on God's inimitable way of being with us." Miller shares some wonderful insights in this delightful volume.
