5.0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Pleasure
An unexpected pleasure, that's the only way I can describe this book. Initially, I purchased "Loving Lefties" for a friend who has had a lifelong interest in her left-handedness. It was not something I would have chosen to read, even if I was left-handed, but when I began paging through it, I found, to my surprise, that it is very well written, quite entertaining, and...

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
To be honest, this book was pretty badly written. The author seems to have trouble leading the reader from one sentence to the next. Also, the information presented in the book are not very useful for someone who just has SOME form of access to general reading material like news, magazine and internet articles. All the book does is telling us the obvious in a different...

This review is from: Loving Lefties: How to Raise Your Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World (Paperback)
An unexpected pleasure, that's the only way I can describe this book. Initially, I purchased "Loving Lefties" for a friend who has had a lifelong interest in her left-handedness. It was not something I would have chosen to read, even if I was left-handed, but when I began paging through it, I found, to my surprise, that it is very well written, quite entertaining, and informative. Rather than overwhelming the reader with an endless spate of technical jargon, or writing down to her audience as is too often done, Ms. Healey (or her "writer," a Grant Jarrett? whom she aptly praises in the book's acknowledgements) draws the reader in and educates in a tone and language that keeps you reading and learning about an unexpectedly intriguing topic. I couldn't be more enthusiastic about this book.

To be honest, this book was pretty badly written. The author seems to have trouble leading the reader from one sentence to the next. Also, the information presented in the book are not very useful for someone who just has SOME form of access to general reading material like news, magazine and internet articles. All the book does is telling us the obvious in a different way. I don't learn anything new from reading this book. If you are totally clueless about lefties, you may learn something. Otherwise, don't buy this book. It's a waste of your time and money.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to call the publishers, September 26, 2004
This review is from: Loving Lefties: How to Raise Your Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World (Paperback)
Obviously, anything can get published nowadays. I wouldn't want to be rude to the author, and I didn't find anything wrong with her writing. If you want to know how to raise a left-handed child in a right-handed world, I'll save you the money here. Just raise him/her like any other child. It has nothing to do with what hand is dominant. Seriously, I think the self-help books are getting a bit carried away, now. I'm left-handed myself, but there were a lot of things that didn't necessarily apply to me. I can't see any reason why you would need a book like this. It's all stuff you've already heard. I'm calling her publishers to see if they'll publish my book on the proper way to inhale when you exhale without hurting your child's self-esteem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Loving lefties is way outdated, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Loving Lefties: How to Raise Your Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World (Paperback)
I read this as soon as it came in & was real excited but take it from me.....FIND ANOTHER BOOK ON LEFTIES!! This book is outdated & honestly boring & poorly written. I was very disappointed. I did find another book by Lauren Milsom called Your Left-handed Child. That book is much more up to date & current.

1.0 out of 5 stars WASTE OF MONEY!!, August 7, 2011
This review is from: Loving Lefties: How to Raise Your Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World (Paperback)
This book might be appropriate for left-handed kindergarteners to read!! IT IS IDIOTIC and NOT HELPFUL!

This woman supposedly has a Ph.D. and writes like her audience is just beginning school. She dumbs everything down...but in fact, there is really NOTHING to dumb down because she doesn't provide ANY relevant or interesting information on the subject matter! I didn't learn ONE thing!

As far as I could tell on the e-book sample, the book promised a discussion of neurobiology, which was my real interest. She touches on cortical information for a few sentences, and that's it.

The book is ONLY 109 pages, and honestly the author probably spends at least a THIRD of that listing famous people who are left-handed. LIKE I CARE!! I'm left-handed and I know I'm unique. I don't need to know famous people share the trait to feel better about myself. I was raised like the other children in my family, despite the difference in my lateral preference. However, that preference alone doesn't necessitate special treatment or accommodations at home or in school.

The author repeats herself constantly...and of course those repeats are the SAME BORING information that I had a problem with in the first place!

I agree with the other reviewer--TRULY, ANYTHING can be published these days. This book is a total waste of money, full of worthless information, and generally inconclusive...I mean, why would a parent NOT love a lefty?

I don't understand how this book got any high-star reviews. I mean, are there really people out there who are so idiotic to believe that left-handed individuals can't fill out bubbles in standardized testing sheets? Let me reiterate that I am left-handed, and I was a straight-A student my whole life. Standardized testing sheets INCLUDED!!

Note on the e-book: the sidebar information was superimposed on the text of the book. What poor planning!

ADDITIONALLY, I don't know if a problem lay with the electronic version, but if not, the editor of this book NEEDS A NEW JOB!! There were too many grammatical errors to count.

CONCLUSION: Don't waste your money! I wish I had another book to recommend on the subject... =(

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tips if you have a left handed child, March 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Loving Lefties: How to Raise Your Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World (Paperback)
I bought several books about lefties when we realized our daughter would be left handed. This book gave us some great insights into her world and we have used the tips in the book. We have also used it to help her teachers understand and help her to cope with being left in a right handed would.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, October 13, 2010
This review is from: Loving Lefties: How to Raise Your Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World (Paperback)
As a right handed parent of two left handed children, this book was extremely informative. Not only did it offer practical tips from any left handed person's point of view, but it had medical research/opinions to bolster the information given. I never would have thought about power tools as a potential safety issue if not for this book. And the information about sides of the brain, hooking v. not hooking, and slight increase in possibility of other issues was both informative and comforting. After reading this, I know a bit more than most left handed people I know and than my sons' teachers about what being left handed can entail. While there is a lot that is unknown, this book simultaneously opens the mind to potential issues and eases the worries that parents naturally have. Recommended for any parent of a leftie!
