5.0 out of 5 stars Great BBQ and Grilling for Low Carbers
Dana Carpender has done it again with The Low-Carb Barbecue Book. I really have to say this is the book to have to create delicious, healthy summer foods!

3.0 out of 5 stars In-disguise Splenda cookbook
I agree with the other reviewers that Dana has a great writing style, but overall, I was disappointed with the book. I don't use/eat Splenda and this entire book seems to be based around the use of it...IN EVERYTHING. Even things that don't need sugar to begin with have, on average, a packet or two added to the recipe. Marketing? Who knows. Low-carb does not have to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great BBQ and Grilling for Low Carbers, June 4, 2004
Dana Carpender has done it again with The Low-Carb Barbecue Book. I really have to say this is the book to have to create delicious, healthy summer foods!

Grilling is of course just about perfect low carb food - it involves fresh fish, fresh chicken, and lots of fresh vegetables. However, there are a few dishes in classic BBQ that are notoriously high carb, like potato salad and baked beans. Dana helps with everything.

There are of course the rubs and marinades, the instructions on grilling and BBQing (and how they differ). There are lots of great spice combos that can be helpful to new cooks, but are second-hand to experienced grillers.

Where the book really shines is in the side dishes and extras. The variety of mock-potato salad are great. There are various slaws and salads, plus a wide array of desserts.

The drinks section is fun but again, what low carb drinker doesn't know about mixing rum and diet coke? Is vodka plus sugar-free lemonade really worth a mention? I'd much rather have had those pages pointed at appetizers or more side dishes.

Still, summertime's parties and picnics will become much easier for low carbers who don't have to worry if something is OK to eat or not. By following the recipes in this book, you're sure to get a delicious dish that is truly low carb and healthy for you.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great cookbook from Dana Carpender, January 4, 2005

I love all of the Dana Carpender cookbooks, and this one is no exception. Both her writing and cooking styles are a lot of fun, and I have yet to make a recipe I didn't like out of her books. The Chipotle Garlic Butter is already a favorite in our house, and we've only had the book a few days. The recipes are simple to follow with easy to find ingredients, and the results are delicious.

Outstanding! This is the 3rd Dana Carpender cookbook I have and it is probably my favorite. Great recipes and great fun to use! I have been de-carbing recipes from my favorite BBQ cookbook and was relieved to see that I was on the right track.

Even things that don't need sugar to begin with have, on average, a packet or two added to the recipe. Marketing? Who knows. Low-carb does not have to mean SPLENDA SPLENDA SPLENDA! I rate the book three stars because I did get some good suggestions from the drink and side-dish recipe sections.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBQs and Picnics are back for low-carbers!, August 5, 2008
I love this book. For those of you who enjoy traditional barbecue and picnic-style foods, this book is a must have.

So many cookbooks are filled with fancy recipes that you would only make on special occasions. What do you do when you're craving onion rings or your Mom's cole slaw but know you can't have those on your low-carb diet? Dana Carpender's Low Carb Barbecue Book is filled with low-carb versions of all the foods you really want and crave.

The first of the book gives tips on grilling techniques and tools and lists some speciality ingredients that are used.

There is a large section on sauces and rubs, followed by pork, poultry, beef, seafood, and kebabs. There are also sections on vegetables, slaws, sides, beverages and desserts.

Dana Carpender uses Atkins bake mixes in the recipes for hush puppies and onion rings, just a warning for those who cannot find those in your area. She also uses Splenda in tons of the recipes if you don't like the use of Splenda.

I think the recipes are delicious and the ones for the low-carb baked beans, unpotato salad, and the peanut butter and jelly pie are worth the purchase of the book alone.

I currently have ALL Dana Carpender's books. I love her style of writing. She is so down to earth. In her books, she will tell you some brands that she has tried and what tastes good and what is horrible. I have loved everything that I've made from her cookbooks and am inspired everytime I pick up her books. If you are trying Low-Carb, her books should be in your kitchen. She is great and I will continue to purchase her cookbooks as they become available. I never feel like I am on a diet when I use her recipes. Infact, I'm not on a diet...I have just changed the way I eat and think about food.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, June 5, 2010

This book is worth the purchase price just for all the sauces and side ideas alone.
It's so hard for new LC'ers to cook without all the tricks they may be used to from their previous lifestyle, using sugar-filled sauces and condiments.

Very nice book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Home Run for Dana, February 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have to say I am biased. I have been follow Dana for a long time, via internet at first, then through her book "How I Gave up my Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 lbs." Now I collect her cook books. Sometimes a recipe is so simple it's more of a "why didn't I think of that" and other times it's an elaborate luxury. Either way, the majority of the recipes in her books fit right with my own tastes. Any serious low carb lifer needs her books as the variety and creativity will enrich their dining experiences.
