Book Description

March 10, 2000
This book is for everyone who wants to learn why low carb diets actually work. And, why an ever-increasing number of health care professionals consider them healthier than low-fat diets. In easy-to-understand language, Low Carb Diets briefly explains the scientific principles underlying these popular diet plans.

Author Susan Somerset Webb begins by providing a short synopsis of how America got itself entrenched in the low-fat mentality. The parallels between increased carb consumption and the rise of obesity and autoimmune diseases is discussed.

The author then clearly demonstrates how a diet high in carbohydrates and low in fat can contribute to weight gain. And, if you must take off weight, lower your cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, or level your blood sugar, you will learn why restricting dietary carbohydrates can solve these problems.

One chapter is devoted to "Beginning the Low Carb Lifestyle" and another discusses maintaining the "Healthy Low Carb Lifestyle." However, for readers who want an in-depth low-carb education, Somerset Webb reviews and compares well-known and less well-known diet books and their plans. Atkins, Carbohydrate Addicts, Protein Power, and SugarBusters are some of the 14 books she reviews briefly. For the reader curious about low carb diets but unsure where to start, this short, easy-to-read book is the perfect introduction.

About the Author

Susan Somerset Webb has been interested in nutrition and diet for more than two decades. However, it was only when she was diagnosed with hypoglycemia a few years ago that she became serious about exactly what she ate. As she read everything available on the subject, it did not take her long to discover the important role of carbohydrates in any diet. She moved to a low carb diet and found her health changed for the better.

Somerset Webb wanted others to experience her success with low carb living. But she didnt want success to elude anyone because the science underlying many of these low carbohydrate diet books can be difficult. She set out to interpret and simplify and difficult material for the average reader. She leads the reader easily through the low carb maze so they can choose the diet thats best for their lifestyle.

This review is from: Low Carb Diets : Easy & Healthy Weight Loss Programs That Really Work! (Paperback)
Webb's low carb book gives it to us straight - and funny - without having to wade through lengthy volumes written by competing experts. Webb summarizes low carb arguments made by all leading proponents - and distills the best into a hundred well-written pages. Very worthwhile.
