5.0 out of 5 stars My Wish Came True!! January 12, 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback
I've been doing low carb since March of 2009, and am now also gluten free. Ha! Just TRY to find a cookbook with healthy GOOD recipes that fit both those parameters!! So I was delighted when I read that some of my favorite authors were collaborating on one. Naturally, I pre-ordered so I could get one fast.

I was NOT disappointed! Honestly, even though it's decently priced, it is worth way more. Really, you will NOT be sorry. You won't find a handful of good recipes and the rest fillers... no, these are all terrific! Everything I've tried so far is wonderful. Sure, you have to get set up with a few ingredients that are used repeatedly in lowcarb/gluten free cooking... you know, like almond meal, your favorite kinds of sweeteners that are not sugar, coconut oil, maybe some whey protein powder and some coconut flour. But once on hand, you're good to go.

Okay, I'll fess up here: I get tired of people on a "diet" who say they can't have this, they have to give up that, whine whine. Well, I don't give up anything! This cookbook shows you that there are healthy alternatives to almost anything you might miss from the "old" days... you know, the days where what we ate made us unhealthy and fat!

Donuts, carrot cake, pies, stuffed mushrooms, banana cream pie, biscuits and gravy, blueberry muffins, personal pan pizzas, chocolate chip cookies, maple pecan flax granola, waffles, bbq ribs, ice cream, corn dogs, buffalo wings, eggnog french toast, German bacon salad, scalloped potatoes, chocolate torte, french silk pie, new york cheesecake, gobs more... YIKES, I just made myself hungry! And these aren't "junk" food. They are all sugarfree/gluten free, healthier versions of the old way. This is the NEW way, the healthy way, for life.

Do ya think I love this cookbook??? :-D

Edited Sept 29, 2012: Thanks to a good comment by Hazeleyes, I wanted to add some new info here:

I don't want to give the impression this is mostly a dessert cookbook. It surely is not! I guess lots of folks new to low carbing and gluten free, who miss the desserts, are interested in that info.

Let's see if I can give some more specifics:
There are 5 main recipe contributors, well known cooks in the low carb world.

Each author has their section, in which they share recipes from the following categories:
Appetizers & Beverages; Breads, Muffins & More; Breakfasts; Main Courses & Sides; Soups & Salads; Sweet Endings; and Miscellaneous.

The dessert category is only one among the seven. The book is 339 pages, and includes lots of info and resources to go along with the recipes.

Here are just some of my personal favorites (all sugarfree, lowcarb, gluten free): Chicken Cordon Bleu; Rosemary Garlic Scones; Roasted Cauliflower with Feta and Walnuts; Maria's Pizza Crust; Beef Stroganoff (uses cabbage "noodles"); Maple Pecan Flax Granola; Maple's Meatballs (fantastic!); Bacon Cheeseburger Soup; Eggcellent Meatloaf with Bacon; Low Carb Pancakes; Finger Food Tuna Snacks; 24 Hour Chili; Coconut Bread French Toast; Breakfast Bonanza Muffins (with eggs & sausage); Turkey, Spinach & Feta Burgers.

I find many of the recipes are forgiving... I can swap out an ingredient if I don't have it on hand. For instance, I used ground hamburger instead of ground turkey for that last one I listed, the Turkey, Spinach & Feta Burgers. My husband LOVES those!! I've made them several times.

There are many, many condiment type recipes. Sauces, creams, dressings, breads, crackers, crusts,
coatings, dips, gravies, bake mixes, glazes, frostings, salad toppers, rubs, etc. Anything you might need, but thought you'd have to give up going gluten/sugar free. You can go as fancy or simple for a meal as you wish.

I hope this helps. :-)

Format:Perfect Paperback
As someone who had his life radically changed as a result of the healthy low-carb lifestyle change that started for me on January 1, 2004, I know the power of sharing what I've discovered with as many people as possible. I've been privileged through my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" projects (books, blogs, podcasts, etc.) to become a big part of this loving and ever-expanding community of people who realize that high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb living is so much more than about simple weight loss. It's an effective way to become optimally healthy for a lifetime!

What Ian and Jennifer Eloff have done with LOW-CARBING AMONG FRIENDS is bring together this low-carb community in one cohesive voice to boldly proclaim what the low-carb lifestyle has done to change the world and to show others how they can do it in their own life through mouthwatering and delicious recipes. Featuring some of the top names in the low-carb blogosphere, they have accomplished a feat that has yet to be done previously--joining together hand-in-hand with the people working behind-the-scenes in the world of low-carb living helping change the lives of real people. From YouTube video star Kent Altena to nutritionist Maria Emmerich and even a few names you may not recognize but are doing incredible work, this first book in what is sure to be a bestselling series starts off with a bang.

And it's not just laypeople involved either. Several well-known medical doctors from around the world make contributions to this book as well as high-profile bloggers like Dana Carpender. I was privileged to be a part of this project and will be contributing to future editions in this series, too. If you're new to low-carb living and need some helpful ideas about how to implement gluten-free, low-carb recipes into your new lifestyle change, then GET THIS BOOK! Even long-time low-carbers will enjoy getting a fresh new perspective on their diet of choice that will surely reignite the enthusiasm about this way of eating that has been a cornerstone in their health pursuit for so many years. You won't regret owning a copy of this amazing book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy recipes November 19, 2011
Format:Perfect Paperback
I have been lowcarbing for over 9 years and love to cook. What a wonderful cookbook this is for those of us who don't use flour or sugar. It's also perfect for diabetics, too.
Jennifer posted my lowcarb milk recipe in this book and I am honored to have a tiny part of this cookbook. Many other wonderful cooks have contributed great recipes for
the lowcarb/diabetic/gluten-free community.
