Editorial Reviews

A legend of the Electric Bass, JEFF BERLIN is considered by many to be THE finest Electric Bass virtuoso in the world. He is universally hailed as a true innovator by fellow musicians (like Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Billy Sheehan and countless others) and by listeners alike.

On his RANDOM ACT RECORDS debut, Jeff offers a set of sizzling standards from the jazz repertoire, including tunes by Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Benny Golson and Pat Metheny. Joined by the multi-talented RICHARD DREXLER (on Acoustic Bass and Piano) and renowned Drummer MIKE CLARK, the trio illustrates a complete knowledge of their instruments and of the songbook. The combination of Acoustic and Electric Basses presents a unique texture; Berlin's distinctive Electric voice ''sings'' the melodies. With Drexler switching to and from the Piano on each track, the trio has the sonic impact of four players.

Low Standards represents the HIGHEST standards of musicality, soulful energy and distinctive virtuosity. All music lovers will be enthralled by these standards - the project is a Bass wizard's ultimate nod to the Jazz masters.

Jeff Berlin is undoubtedly one of the greatest bass players in the world. His electric melds perfectly with Richard Drexler's slamming upright bass, while drummer Mike Clark underpins all with perfection. Drexler is also an amazing pianist: He plays acoustic piano on most tunes, switching back and forth from the upright. The combination of basses really works...
I've never heard Jeff play Jazz Standards - The song selections are superb, with 3 tunes from Wayne Shorter (my favorite Jazz composer), and others from Bill Evans, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley ("Vashkar," most known due to Tony Williams), Benny Golson and Pat Metheny.
Berlin has rightfully been hailed as the greatest electric bass soloist on the planet. His harmonic and melodic conceptions are almost beyond belief. LOW STANDARDS is THE best album I've heard in this kind of realm -- Nobody else could even attempt to play these tunes this musically. Or well. Kudos to Jeff, Richard and Mike!!!

I've been a fan of Mr Berlin for many years and quite honestly this album sounds like he fell into the flange pool. The man is a brilliant technician, but even as a bassist, I find it boring to listen to albums that are perpetual bass solos. The way I see it, is that Jeff Berlin is a great compliment to other players. Bill Bruford of course and Peter Levin. Palewell Park and Abraham are 2 songs that were made great due to Jeff's amazing talent. As a solo artist he comes up short because everything starts to sound the same. I'm a fan of his work, but this album comes up dry.

I've been a fan of Mr. Jeff Berlin since his days with Bruford. I've seen him live as well and found him to be remarkable - not only with his monstrous tone, technique and facility - but with his other-worldly approach to his craft. In my opinion (and yes, I am a huge Jaco fan) - there is no better electric player on the planet (past or present).

Given my high regard, I was skeptical that LOW STANDARDS could top his former release HIGH STANDARDS. I was not disappointed; in fact: of all his recent works, this latest CD is by far the most daring, far-reaching, and satisfying of Jeff Berlin's works.

More than anything - it is truly a work of art.

It would be enough to pit two basses (one upright and one electric) against a prolific drummer.
It would be enough to have the upright player switch back and forth between acoustic piano and bass on and between cuts.
It would be enough to have Berlin solo, comp and groove on these stellar tunes.

But when combining them all together - with a pristine recording that makes you feel like you're in the middle of these masters - it's pure jazz heaven.

I don't know of the details that went into the recording, song selection, or performances of this record. But I do know this:

These guys are monsters. The interplay by and between them is the highest level in the genre. Thank goodness there's a record label out there that's interested in avoiding "fluff jazz" and is bold enough to put great music and great artists first.

LOW STANDARDS is the NEW STANDARD of jazz as art. And Jeff Berlin is the standard bearer for all.

The playing really deserves 6 stars.I gave it 4 because I was expecting Jeff to go a bit more out of his realm which did not happen. His playing is brilliant as always but nothing new from Mr.Berlin.If you love these tunes and you a bass player into no gimmicks just great playing you will love this album. If you have been aware of Jeff for many years then maybe expecting him to step out in a new direction and surprise us in ways that he hasn't,t done before, you may be a bit dissapointed

This album is a bass dream. It provides an excellent sampling of Jeff's stellar playing. But the interplay between Jeff and double bassist Richard Drexler gives a unique and tasty low-end salad. Drexler's bass solos shine just as bright as Jeff's, and it is interesting to hear Jeff's approach to backing those solos; often he comps like a pianist. Drexler is also an excellent pianist, and the times when he steps away from the bass to tickle the ivories provides a fresh breath of air to keep things lively, if making it more conventional.
