Editorial Reviews

The long awaited debut full length from the Dallas, TX quintet. It's soft and subtle, yet anthemic. There's pop, folk, some keys, acoustic guitars, some noisy guitars, it's a well crafted blend. "Air Review can best be described as the culmination of the past decade of independent music. It s the sort of band that could not have happened had there not been The Postal Service, a Flaming Lips, a Grandaddy, an Iron & Wine, or a Sufjan Stevens. Their debut album, Low Wishes is a scant nine-song, half-hour affair, with songs that get to the point and do not meander. Yes, you may have that deja-vu that makes you think you ve heard these songs somewhere, or that you know you ve heard lead singer Douglas Hale on the radio, even though you haven t. In spite of their influences being clearly visible, Low Wishes is far from an unenjoyable listening experience. It was a wise decision to keep this album brief, for two reasons: one, had the album been any longer, it would have been too long, and two, the short length allows each song to stand on its own. Whether it s the optimistic percussion-driven title track, the banjo-meets-computers balladeer folk of America s Son, or the shuffling Britpop minded Animal, all of these songs hold your attention, and shine brightly, even as you move on to the next song. Sure, Air Review might not have the most original sound, but Low Wishes isn t an album of dreck or filler. A little time and maturity will help these folk to expand their sound, and given time, they might rise above their influence." - Big Takeover

I really like the fresh sound this album brings to the table. It's always good to hear bands reinvent themselves from one project to the next. I definitely recommend it for your ears.

Great record! I only wish it was a bit longer. I love the layers and various textures of sound achieved here (best use of a banjo I've heard in a good while). It's not rock, and I'd not really call it alternative. Maybe post-alternative? The whole thing has a modern, smart, artistic feel to it, while at the same time there is a vintage vibe woven throughout. I'm impressed and want to hear more.

I live in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, a spot frequented these days by various mostly-unknown traveling musical talents. A few times a year a small, some might even call it microscopic in nature, music festival presents itself for a weekend. Parking is ridiculous, the noise never stops, and a lot of wanna-bees roam the streets, seemingly getting in the way of my ability to go about my daily life of living in said part of town. Needless to say, one such a weekend was especially irritating with the walls to my loft shaking for what seemed like hours on end. Needless to say, I wasn't particularly thrilled. Amidst that there was a band playing that, for some reason or another, caught my attention. I could literally throw a rock from my window to the stage, so I had been hearing various lackluster tunes throughout the entire day. Out of nowhere, a melodic wave of harmony seeped through the outward-facing windows and wrapped itself around me. For the first time since I can remember, I walked over to my window and opened it.

I listened for a minute, eagerly making sure that what I was hearing was in fact reality and not some misconstrued interpretation of the ever-present banging of endless instruments that had not ceased in over a day and a half at that point. My ears were far from tricking me. I quickly shuttled over to my computer, searched for "Deep Ellum Music Festival" and found the performance schedule for the day. Air Review was playing. I hopped on Spotify, still weary that, even though I had heard a song I quite enjoyed, that the rest of the album failed to live up to the precedent set. It did not disappoint. Only an EP at the time (and now a full-length album), Low Wishes is simply amazing. If you opt not to listen to this album you are doing a gigantic disservice to yourself.

The only thing that could make this any better is if they put it on vinyl. Maybe one day?

I haven't bought a new CD in years, but this new band delivers on so many levels. A combination of Cold Play and The Alan Parsons Project, this band takes you into new places. If you like mellow rock, then listen. I can't wait to see them live.

Keep an eye on these guys - they're evolving very rapidly. You can see it in this album - a clear move towards lush arrangements - while keeping a great soul and cohesiveness to the album.

Some real stand-out tracks - nothing second rate. Tightly crafted. Definitely a great bedroom album.
