Book Description

Lowcountry Shrimp Boil shares with the reader an authentic recipe for a Southern dish that hails from the State of South Carolina. The origins of this recipe are from the beautiful and charming City of Beaufort, South Carolina.
This dish is sometimes referred to as Frogmore Stew (yet frogs are not part of the recipe). The name comes from Frogmore, a small community on Saint Helena Island, near Beaufort, South Carolina. You know it is authentic Frogmore Stew when it contains shrimp (not crab or crawfish), corn on the cob, and red potatoes.

The spice mix is a special blend of seasonings, a little different for each family, yet all have a similar taste that brings to the table a bite of the South. Tabasco sauce is splashed on at the table to bring a bit of heat to the palate.
The boil is prepared outside, using a propane cooker and steaming pot. It is traditionally served, drained and then poured, onto a picnic table covered with newspaper. The shrimp boil is piled high in the center of the table and each guest picks out what they wish to eat.

This is a festive dish served with ice-cold beer and ice-cold sweet tea. It stands alone and does not need accompanying dishes. Lowcountry Shrimp Boil offers the recipe for an appetizer of hot boiled peanuts; this is a specialty from Charleston, South Carolina. Boiled peanuts can be served while the guests are waiting for the shrimp boil to be prepared.

The meal can be concluded with a delicious Southern dessert, peach pie. Lowcountry Shrimp Boil shares with the reader the recipe for homemade pie slab pie, which can be made a day or two ahead and served cold after the meal for the final touches of an authentic Southern treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes July 30, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Quick to read with simple easy instructions to prepare delicious original dishes. As a born and raised South African, I found these southern recipes interesting and different from typical mainstream American recipe books. I highly recommend the "Olive Slaw" recipe - it was quick and easy to prepare, and soooo delicious! The author does a great job of spicing the book with her unique personality... I especially enjoyed the humorous "Shrimp Trampy" anecdote!

More About the Author

Thank you for stopping by to check out my little corner of Amazon. I appreciate that you are taking a moment to get to know me. Right now, I am going through a big career change, like many Americans! I was a technical editor for 24 years, but my full-time steady job disappeared in 2008. I starting picking up freelance technical writing jobs, and found that I had time left over from that to try my hand at creative writing and cooking.

I shadowed a famous French chef for two months; I loved it. It was such a blast; every second was fast-paced and filled with exquisite food. It was exciting to be behind the scenes in his kitchen. And, yes, I got yelled at a lot, and burnt. Duck fat can be dangerous! But, that just helped me develop a thicker skin, literally.

My first love is cooking; my second love is writing, so I am giving writing cookbooks a whirl. As you will see I am starting off small. My son, Andrew, has created all of my cookbook covers with the exception of one. A professional graphic artist created the Lowcountry Shrimp Boil cover. Andrew created all of the rest, and still continues to create them for me. I just have to ask on a day he is in a good mood.

I am sharing family recipes, not complicated recipes created by a test kitchen and a big publishing house. I do the word processing and formatting. Friends have been testing the recipes and alerting me when there are typos. So this is a small family business. I have come along way from the first day when I uploaded Lowcountry Shrimp Boil with the HTML code exposed!

I am from the Deep South and those Southern roots run through everything that I do. My cooking style reflects these roots which you will see in all of my eBooks. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you will return and get to know me as I carve out my little slice of the Indie pie.
