Handy, great storage, but uncomfortable, September 13, 2010
This review is from: Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack Digital SLR Camera Case (Red) + Accessory Kit for Canon Rebel T3, T3i, T1i, T2i, EOS 60D, 5D, 7D, Nikon D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100, D7000, D300s, Olympus Evolt E-5, E-30, E-620 & Sony Alpha A560, A580, A33, A35, A55 (Electronics)
Mostly, I really enjoy this pack. In particular, I like the amount of room that it has in the top for personal items. The other packs I considered seemed to just have room for a cell phone and other small items. This one allows for small items, snacks, a layer and even a paper back book. Perfect for traveling with. Though the sturdiness of the bottom part of the bag prevents it from fitting easily under the seat in front of you on airplanes, so you have to store it overhead.
I found the side access to the camera compartment wonderful. I just love it. Other people have complained that they still have to take the pack off and open it up to switch lenses, but I don't find that the case. I just open the side, loosen the velcro around the lens I want and swap them. At the moment I have a Nikon D80, a 18-55 mm lens, a 70-300 mm lens, hood, and external flash. I have room for at least 2 more lenses.
The bag is, however, very uncomfortable if used for long periods of time. It does not have great back support, could use a chest strap, and the hip straps are no where near my hips (I have a regular length torso) so they don't help take some of the weight off my shoulders. Perhaps the Fastpack that doesn't include room for the laptop is more comfortable on the back. I used this pack in Yellowstone, and it worked fine then, but that's because we weren't really hiking around that much. Just taking the short boardwalks to scenic spots. I just hiked a moderate trail in the White Mountains for 6 hours with this pack and do not recommend it. I only had the D80 with the small lens, some filters, a water bottle, snacks, and a layer and it killed my shoulders. I have visible bruises on my collar bones. It's just not well designed for ACTUAL hiking.
But, as I said before, I generally like this pack for light hikes, traveling, and touristy activities. The storage setup is excellent, I just wish it was a bit more comfortable for the activities it seems to be the most useful for.

Nice pack. Would have liked a few more pockets for my gadgets but overall, very nice.
