Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I used LowePro products for the previous 15 years and owned nearly every bag they produced including Fast Packs, Pro Roller (x200 and x300), Slingbag, Stealth Reporter, Event Messenger, the previous Messenger line, etc.... I also owned many Think Tank, Tamrac, and Timbuk2 bags. I admit openly I was addicted to gear bags. Last year, I switched entirely to the Domke brand mainly because, as with many photographers, my shooting style changed. I also chose to go retro with a minimalist approach since I took up street shooting. By comparison, LowePro bags are generally bulkier by design to maximize gear protection whereas Domke bags are designed to be more streamlined, almost in a minimalist fashion. So, when given an opportunity to checkout the LowePro, I was interested.

The new LowePro Messenger line could be considered a response to the Think Tank retrospective line such as the Think Tank Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag - Pinestone, which I owned at one point. That was the first thought that came to my mind when I first opened the box. The LowePro Messenger 160 AW has the same subdued and non descript approach to gear carrying and thankfully, LowePro did not place its logo on the bag, making it even stealthier. The bag simply does not look like a camera bag and instead looks like an A-typical messenger or book bag. As with nearly all LowePro gear bags, the build quality is impeccable and to be admired frankly. The fabric (synthetic) feels and acts very close to canvas (called 'Custom Perofrmance Fabric"). It is a bag made to last for a very long time and can take a lot of abuse. It even includes a built in rain cover.

This review is for the Lowepro Pro Messenger 160 AW. First off there are some excellent reviews on this Amazon thread about this bag. They are detailed in their technicality and user opinions seem mostly accurate from experienced photo enthusiasts. My input is for information not mentioned on most reviews that may help you decide to buy or not buy this bag. I bought this bag impulsively from a great photo shop while on vacation in Las Vegas a few years back. They had an enormous inventory of camera bags and I was able to compare first hand between a lot of models and manufacturers.

This style bag compares to the retro-look Think Tank Retrospective canvas messenger. Both Lowepro and Think Tank provide competing size models within their canvas style lines. I would consider the Lowepro Pro the heavy duty version of the Think Tank which is already sufficient. The 160 AW weighs almost three pounds empty, an indication of its durable construction. As mentioned by everyone in these comments the quality of materials is superb. If you are a serious amateur or pro shooter with an equipment investment to match, than this bag may be of interest to you within your level of investment. Owning 10 grand worth of gear, which can be three or four pieces these days, deserves a better surrounding than a $49 thin nylon bag for protection. Knowing that camera bag styles are different for different shooting situations, this is not the bag I would recommend for casual walkabout or museum shooting. My gold standard for that is the trusty Domke F3X Ballistic of which all others are measured for single body, two medium lens usage. It is comfortable to work out of and spend the day with on your shoulder.

The Lowepro cannot hold an iPad and a camera without a compromise to reconfigure the internals.

Obviously this bag will not suffice if you carry a lot of gear. I carry a Nikon d600 with lens, and a fuji xe1 with lens and the bag works great. Its small enough that you do not fill like you are lugging around a backpack, it is easy to gain access to and very cool looking. Love it. I have a lot of lowepro bags (four), this is my favorite.

This bag is a good compromise between being small yet having enough room for the essentials. It comfortably holds my camera, flash, batteries, charger and a few odds and ends. It could probably hold another lens instead of the flash if needed. I can easily access my camera and the pockets while wearing the bag. I especially like having the option between the quick access flap with a magnetic clasp or unfolding the flap so I can more securely close the bag with velcro. All the zippers inside the bag have a pocket that covers the pull preventing them from being able to scratch your equipment. The bag is comfortable to cary around. If it was much larger I'd probably put more in it which would make it too heavy for extended use. This bag is best for most of my needs but like most messenger style bags the flap closure means there is no way to seal it up completely. If I'm going to be traveling on an airplane I prefer a backpack style camera bag that I can stow under the seat in front of me. If I were to do that with this bag I'd have to make sure there wasn't anything small that could fall out.

With more lenses I own now I needed a bigger bag but I didn't want a bag that was TOO big. This is the perfect size! I carry my D90 with battery grip and 85mm attached. On the sides I have my 50mm and 18-105mm and on the other side I have one of my speedlights.
