Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- Materials to help students write state reports are always in demand. To meet this need, many libraries already own the series by Allan Carpenter and Dennis Fradin (both Childrens). The Aylesworths themselves have already written a series, consisting of the same titles, called ``Let's Discover the States'' (Chelsea House, 1988). Those titles have been distilled here, eliminating the narrative style and the three main sections--history, land, and people--found in those treatments in an attempt to reach younger audiences. Bare-bones information is organized under a multitude of boldfaced headings--state seal, flag, etc.; population; geography and climate; industries; agriculture; government; places to visit; and so on. The text on each page is divided into three narrow columns separated by fine black lines and set off with plenty of white space. There is also at least one full-color photograph on each page; many of them can be found in the earlier surveys. The graphics are attractive, but not terribly relevant; the maps are grossly inadequate. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA
