I have received 3 units from Amazon because the 1st 2 were faulty on arrival. The 1st two after running the boat over the speed it could read the bottom (about 18mph)when coming back to a stop even after 15 minutes the sonar never recovered and would stay stuck on 1.8ft. Spent time with Lowrance on the phone and went through numerous power cycles, soft resets, hard resets, and software updates of 1.8. They said just return them to Amazon so I did.

Amazon sent me unit #3 and it does the same things as the 1st after now 1 1/2 months but only about 10% of the time. I though I could limp it through until another software patch or winter and then I would send it in. Patch 2.0 fixes nothing. I have a Lake Insight PRO chip that works on the Lowrance Insight Planner on my PC but not on the Elite-7 HDI on my boat. After an hour on the phone 2 weeks ago I was told to send in the chip because they never had any problem with the Elite-7 units and they would have an answer 2 days after they received (which was 8/28) it and email me a response. I called Lowrance 8/30 as a proactive followup and they have not had time. Now 9/6 I call and they still have not done anything and then John @ Lowrance told me they are really busy and that I am not the only warranty customer and to be patient. I have over $1K in Elite-7 HDI, PRO2013 Lowrance chip, two HDI transducers, and a Lowrance transducer switch. My 3rd unit and I should be patient?

Big Fails:
1)Sending out $700 electronics that don't work as advertised.
2)Two major software patches and units still are unreliable.
3)Selling to the public products that should be in BETA testing.
4)Over promising and under delivering in warranty service.

This unit is awesome. The vivid imagery from the downscan is remarkable. Best unit for the money hands down!! Very user friendly and the gold sdi card gives great chart at a click of a button. also the split screen and triple screen view is an awesome feature.

First let me say that this is a really good unit. If you are looking for solid performance on the sonar, this package has it. The down scan is REALLY great. Gives clarity to what you are seeing on the sonar. For Sonar and downscan alone, I would have given this unit a 5+ star rating. The screen size is big enough to see detail with out being so big it is in the way of my other instruments. Install and setup were really easy to follow.
**FYI - you will want to do the v3 upgrade on the unit, it does clear up some issues I had initially. The file is available at lowrance.com. All you do is put the file on a micro SD card, make sure the unit is pwered off, insert the card and power on the unit. The Elite7 will detect the card and automaticially perform the upgrade.

The reason I gave this unit only 3 stars is the GPS map. I noticed this unit had some issues scrolling the built in GPS map. Didn;t think too much of it until I added the Navionics+ chip. Once I did this the GPS map would experience issues where it would take several minutes to redraw the screen, often times as you were under way, the GPS map would scroll off the screen since the unit was having trouble redrawing the map to keep up with my movement. My boat has a top speed of around 25-30 MPH, so it's not a super fast boat.
After a couple calls to lowrance (who were great by the way) I spoke with a tech who advised me that the Elite series units were built with the GEN1 processors so the maps did have a little lag time. This would be worse with a map card installed due to the additional detail the unit would have to process and redraw. I upgraded to one of the HDS models with the GEN2 processors and solved the map issue.

The value of this machine is good. Very nice chart plotting and sonar machine. If you are buying for the down imaging feature, don't. That feature is more or less a black and white version of the sonar. If you buy this also purchase a clear screen protector and put it on the screen before you come close to the water. I didn't and realized the waterspots don't come off the screen similar to a laptop screen. After applying the screen protector I've had little issue with that. One poor chart plotting feature is that when your boat runs off the map screen you must manually maneuver the cross hairs to move the map. That's pretty annoying when you're moving at a good clip. Other than that it's been very helpful on the water. It also does not come with a sun cover so you have to purchase that separately. My unit was made in Mexico. Good luck and tight lines!

I am very dissappointed in the time it takes for the chart to change from one picture to the next when either zooming in or out, or just changing from whatever page I'm on back to the chart. It takes a minimum of 7 to 15 seconds for the chart to look through the NAV chip and pop up on the screen. It has a long lag when running at speeds when zoomed in too far. The top third of the page turns white until the chart catches up. I always thought Lowrance was in the market to make the very best of products for the consumer since they charge so much for them. The processor on "MY" Elite 7 is not fast enough to process the NAVIONICS chip for satisfactory results. The Sonar and Downscan are extremely clear and I really like being able to split those screens. But I am VERY dissappointed in the chart speed. I give the sonar and downscan 5 stars but I give the chart only 2.
