One of the Best Bands out there,
By James Fowler (Conway, AR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lucero (Audio CD)
I've gotten to see these guys live at least 50 times. I've hung out with them at Vino's and enjoyed there music. This, in my opinion, is there best album. With songs like Littlesilver Hearts, My Best Girl, Wandering Star, Wasted, Drink Til We're Gone and others, its just a masterpiece of Alt-Country rock. Its good, sad music.

Best Alt Country Band Out There,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lucero (Audio CD)
Not to reiterate what has been written in previous reviews, but you must go see this band live. The CD is incredible in its own right, one of my favorites out of my entire collection, but this band must be seen live to fully appreciate them. These guys are great songwriters, though not in any kind of complex or technical sense. Every song tells a story that you can't help but sing along too and think about the time you felt like that too. If you've every had your heart broken or broken a heart yourself, Lucero has a song for you.

A sweet surprise...,

I was introduced to Lucero and found a whole new appreciation for this style of music. Luckily, my first encounter with them was live in Nashville at 12th and Porter, and now I can't seem to stop listening to the CD over and over and over. The lead singer's voice is truly unique with expressive lyrics about the things of life. The steel guitar wins my heart, almost sounding as though the lyrics are moaning with it... I HIGHLY recommend this CD. It's a must! Their first CD is not too bad, either... a little more raw, a little less produced, yet I must say that this band should go FAR. I cannot WAIT for them to get themselves back to Nashvegas so I can see them live again... I'm telling you... this is THE band. :)

Rural Electrification Administration,
This review is from: Lucero (Audio CD)
Lucero's music is raging, unbridled, delicate, rollicking, impassioned, duende-haunted, and full of the sadness of distance. They are one of the great country outfits playing these days and deserve far greater recognition. They make other country groups sound like dying hair-dressers. See them live. Buy their music. Tatoo their country light beneath your eyes.

Pain encapsulated,

If you've ever even vaguely liked alt-country, and if you've ever experienced pain of the heartbreak variety, buy this album right now! Lucero is one of the most incredible bands out there, both live (if they come within a 500 mile radius of you, go see them!) and on this album. Also, you can listen to great non-album and live tracks on their web site...Their songs just drip ache, but in that good way.

If you haven't heard of these guys, best way to describe them is as if Curt Cobain fronted a honky-tonk country band. The band is rock solid -- good guitars, pedal steel, etc. Songs like All Sewn Up and My Best Girl sound like something Jerry Jeff Walker might have written if he was a generation younger. While Hold Fast actually does sound like something Curt Cobain might have written.
If anyone is scared off by my mentioning Cobain twice, its worth noting the Drive By Truckers had Lucero warm up for them. Nuff said. Little Silver Heart and My Best Girl are probably the two best tracks on the album, but I'd recommend getting the whole album which really holds together and is worth listening to from start to finish.

Wow I am amazed with this CD. A friend of mine recommended it last night and I listened to the entire album last night via mp3. I purchased the album last night and would recommend it to anyone. This is not really my type of music but I must say Lucero is a must have in the collection.

Tennessee,
By Michael Carter (New Albany, Mississippi) - See all my reviews

I worked the Double Decker Arts Festival this past weekend in Oxford, Mississippi and was literally blown away by Lucero. I had never heard them before and not since Nirvana has any band impressed me this much on a first listen. I bought "Tennessee" after the show and every song is great. I guess if you record your album at the Zebra Ranch in Coldwater, Mississippi it just has to come from the heart.

"Where have I heard this before?" I wondered upon my first listening of this album (given to me by a friend who saw them live and said they were great). I played the album a few times in a row to try to figure it out. Repeated play was not a hardship, though I do think that several songs are really variations on the same song. Ultimately, I'm not sure I answered the question, but I found some strong similarities to Everclear, Neil Young (in his plaintive "After The Gold Rush" era), and perhaps John Hiatt and Steve Earle. Fortunately, I love all of those musicians. Finding this album which fits right in that same groove is a happy discovery. Favorite Songs: "My Best Girl" (simple, even cliche concept of his guitar being the best girl he's got, but somehow very nicely done and even genuinely sad.), and "A Dangerous Thing" (again about girl problems), and the one whose title I don't know but he says "one of these days I'm gonna prove myself to you...but it won't be tonight" Ouch. Hate to say, I know how that feels. This is good music for closing time at your favorite bar (too favorite??)
